Cajuns Roll To 87-60 Exhibition Win Over Loyola-New Orleans
11/5/2014 10:24:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns kicked off the 2014-15 season with a bang on Wednesday, cruising past Loyola-New Orleans, 87-60 at the Cajundome.
The Cajuns hit 54.5 percent from the field and got a game-high 16 points from freshman Bryce Washington while putting all 12 players who saw the floor into the scoring column.
"This was a dress rehearsal for our team in a lot of ways," head coach Bob Marlin said. "We came out early in the game and did not defend the way we needed to, and were in a hurry offensively. In the second half we did a much better job."
Louisiana, who averaged better than 81 points per game in 2013-14, outscored the Wolfpack 48-29 in the second half, leading by as much as 30 and opening up what was just an eight-point lead at the half.
Defensively the Cajuns held Loyola to just 33.3 percent shooting for the game, and forced 21 turnovers, resulting in 28 points. UL dominated the paint as well with a 54-24 advantage in the lane, and outscored the Wolfpack 14-0 on fast-break points.
Washington made a living on the inside, hitting eight of his 14 shot attempts in 24 minutes of action. Senior transfer Brian Williams added 14 points, with freshman Johnathan Stove scoring all 10 of his points in the second half.
Guard Kasey Shepherd led the Cajuns with nine boards – eight defensive – to go with nine points and eight assists, while Hayward Register canned three of his six three-point tries for nine points as well. The Cajuns hit five of its 12 tries from beyond the arc on the night with the other triples coming from Xavian Rimmer and Stove.
Washington led the Cajuns in the opening half with eight points and three boards, one of eight UL players to crack the scoring column. A layup from Shepherd gave the Cajuns the lead for good at 8-6 to spark a 10-2 run.
Register stretched the lead back out to eight with his second three of the half midway through the period. That opened another UL run, this one 14-2 to push the lead to 30-15 on a floater in the paint by Jay Wright.
The Wolfpack trimmed the lead down to as much as much as eight with under four minutes to play, but the Cajuns immediately answered with buckets from Washington and Williams, including an alley-oop from Shepherd to Williams for the final bucket of the half before going into the locker room up 39-31.
It took UL less than six minutes for its first 10 point of the second half, scoring the first six points of the period and stretching out an eight-point halftime lead to a comfortable 18-point margin at 61-43 on Stove's triple midway through the half as part of a 14-2 outburst.
A pair of free throws from Stove pushed the lead past 20 with under eight minutes to play, and the lead ballooned to as much as 30 at 81-51 on a putback from Aaron LeBlanc with less than four minutes to play.
The Ragin' Cajuns will officially open up the season on Nov. 14 at home when it hosts Louisiana College at the Cajundome before hitting the road for four straight games as part of the MGM Grand Main Event, beginning Nov. 17 at Tulsa.
