BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – It was another first-place finish and another school- and Sun Belt Conference-record performance for Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns track and field standout Justin Victor on Monday during the opening day of the 2014 SBC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Victor claimed his sixth consecutive individual title of the indoor season – and the biggest one for the Leesville native – when he recorded a Sun Belt Conference Championship throw of 69 feet, 0.75 inches to claim the men's weight throw.

The Cajuns finished third overall with 29 points behind Western Kentucky and Texas State on the women's side after the first day of the two-day meet. On the men's side, the Cajuns were fifth with 21 points and behind UT Arlington (48), Arkansas State (31.33), South Alabama (30.66) and Texas State (29).

The nation's 18th-ranked performer trailed leader Darian Brown of Texas State after three throws before taking the lead on his next attempt. The winning mark by Victor was over a foot farther than his previous school-record toss (67-11.50) set on Feb. 15 at the McNeese Cowboy Indoor III meet in Lake Charles.

Victor's performance was part of a pair of top finishes by the Cajuns on the men's side with Devin Davis finishing second overall in the long jump. Davis, ranked No. 5 among Sun Belt long jumpers, posted a personal-best jump of 24-6.25 to finish behind eventual champion Roelf Pienaar of Arkansas State.

Josh McDaniels finished eighth overall in the pole vault at 15-01.75 with the men's distance medley relay team finishing seventh in 10 minutes, 27.43 seconds. In the first four events of the men's heptathlon, Harald Bust (5th, 2,783 points), Wes Gonzales (9th, 2,555 points) and Christian Umphries (10th, 2,467 points) paced the Cajuns with the final three events slated for Tuesday.

In the women's long jump, three Cajuns earned a combined 16 points, highlighted by a second-place finish by Tia Mitchell. The Shreveport native leaped an indoor-best 19-4 to finish behind Sharika Nelvis of Arkansas State (19-5.50). Teammate Ta'Shania Bean (19-1.25) and Stacy Imagbe (18-4.25) finished third and seventh, respectively for the Ragin' Cajuns.

The Cajuns also placed three athletes among the top eight in the women's high jump with Madalyn Trisler (5-6), Lindsey Harmon (5-6), and Alex Harrell (5-4.25) finishing fourth, sixth and seventh respectively. In the women's distance medley relay, Louisiana earned a sixth-place finish as it crossed the finish line in 12:25.54.

Four Cajuns - Danielle Castaldi (women's 800-meter run), Morgan Breaux (women's 60-meter dash), Matt Rice (men's 800-meter run) and Morgan Cormier (men's 60-meter hurdles) – all qualified for their respective finals on Tuesday.

Action continues on Tuesday at 9 a.m., beginning with the women's pentathlon before concluding with the 4x400-meter relays scheduled for 5 and 5:15 p.m. Live results will be available at www.RaginCajuns.com.
