LAFAYETTE - The defending Sun Belt Conference and three-time defending R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl champion Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team resumed spring practice on Thursday with a strong two-hour practice at Ragin' Cajuns Practice Fields.
Â
"I thought we had a solid practice today," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "I'm still waiting for the some of the young kids to really step up like we need them to. These young kids are really getting their first opportunity this spring. Hopefully that will come in the next few weeks."
Â
Louisiana worked in Cajun gear in their fifth workout of the spring going for 24 periods with the receivers and defensive line taking a big step forward.
Â
"The receivers really made some tough catches and competed today," Hudspeth added. "I thought the D-line was very active."
Â
Veterans Jamal Robinson and James Butler anchor a wide receiver group that is loaded with talent, while the Ragin' Cajuns return seven defensive lineman who saw action a year ago including Christian Ringo, Marquis White and Justin Hamilton.
Â
The Cajuns will return to action on Saturday with the team's first half scrimmage in conjunction with Junior Day starting at 3 p.m. All practice periods are open to RCAF and Quarterback Club members, with proper identification.
Â
"Saturday will be a big day for us," Hudspeth said. "There will be about 500 people there watching them practice. Hopefully it will be a good opportunity to give these guys some energy out there knowing that people are watching them compete."
Â
Louisiana opens the 2014 season on Aug. 30 when the Ragin' Cajuns play host to Southern University in the 14th annual Herbert Heymann Classic at Cajun Field.
