NCAA Participant Cajuns Honored At Annual Team Banquet

Mbamalu earns Academic Achievement, Beryl Shipley Leadership Award
The Sun Belt Conference champion Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team was honored before a capacity crowd on Wednesday as the squad held its annual banquet at City Club River Ranch.
Head coach Bob Marlin and his coaching staff honored the Ragin' Cajuns, who finished with a 23-12 overall mark and earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005.
Bryant Mbamalu, one of three Ragin' Cajuns to reach the 1,000-point career scoring mark during the season, earned both the Academic Achievement Award and the Beryl Shipley Leadership Award. Senior Elridge Moore was named the team's Defensive Player of the Year, Shawn Long was named the Rebounder of the Year and Elfrid Payton was presented with the team's Most Outstanding Player Award.

TEAM NOTES
- Louisiana's 13-2 record at home during the 2013-14 season was the best mark since the Ragin' Cajuns went 13-4 in 1990-91. The 13 wins in the Cajundome marked the third time the Ragin' Cajuns achieved the mark with the school record of 14 set in 1988-89.
- The Ragin' Cajuns 23 wins this season were the most since winning 25 games in 1999-2000. The 23 wins marked the 22nd time in school history the Ragin' Cajuns eclipsed the 20-win barrier in school history.
- Heading into February, the Ragin' Cajuns were 12-9 overall and outrebounding their opponents by +1.4 a game. Louisiana won 11 of its last 13 games to earn a berth in the NCAA Championships and averaged nearly two rebounds more game (39.3 from 37.5) during that span while increasing its rebounding margin to +7.0.
- The Ragin' Cajuns finished the season tied for 12th in scoring offense at 81.0 points per game … tied with Louisville and Louisiana Tech. As a team, Louisiana was 17th in the nation in offensive rebounds, 22nd in free throw attempts, 26th in total rebounds and 43rd in steals.
- Elfrid Payton finished second in the country in free throw attempts with 302. Payton was ninth in total steals, 11th in field goals made, 11th in assists, 17th in assists and 17th in steals. He was one of 10 players this season to record a triple-double
- Shawn Long finished the season 10th in the nation in rebounds and 28th in blocked shots. His 353 rebounds during the season were the sixth-most among Division I players. His 18 double-doubles on the season were the sixth-highest total this season. Long finished 10th nationally in field goals made.
- The trio of Elfrid Payton, Shawn Long and Bryant Mbamalu recorded their 1,000th career point during the 2013-14 season – marking the fourth time in school history that three players achieved the feat in the same season. The first trio to reach the mark was in 1971-72 with Bo Lamar, Roy Ebron and Payton Townsend. It also happened in 1983 with Graylin Warner, Dion Brown and Alonza Allen and in 1994 with Michael Allen, Byron Starks and Tony Moore.
