SAUCIER, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team carded a score of 11-over par (299) in the first round of the 2014 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship to finish in fourth on Monday at Grand Bear Golf Course.
"It quite disappointing to have to count an 82 in the conference championship, particularly from a team that has played every event," head coach Theo Sliman said. "The good thing is that this is only the first round, and by no means are we out of this championship. It's going to take all five guys posting a low score tomorrow for us to make a run at the title."
The Cajuns are six strokes back of South Alabama (+5, 293) for third place in the event. UT Arlington leads the field at 2-under (286) followed by No. 44 Georgia State at even par (288) after 18 holes.
Tyler Klava of South Alabama and Stuart Smallwood of Texas State are tied for the individual lead after the first day at 4-under (68).
Both Fernando Cruz Valle and Thomas Strandemo finished the day in the top 10 as the pair is tied for sixth at 1-under (71).
Haraldur Magnus carded a 3-over (75) in the first round to finish in a tie for 19th. Christian Verrougstraete and Ross Davis closed out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns with Verrougstraete placing in a tie for 47th at 10-over (82), while Davis shot an 83 (+13) in the first round.
"It's very nice to see Fernando get some confidence back," Sliman added. "Both he and Thomas played some really inspired golf today. It was good to see Thomas back up a strong performance from last week. I am sure that Ross and Christian will bounce back from their rounds today. We are going to need them if we want to win this championship."
Louisiana is paired with ULM and WKU in the second round. Play gets underway at 8 a.m. with the teams starting off of hole one and 10. Live scoring for the event can be found on Golfstat.com. The third and final round is slated for Wednesday at 8 a.m.
