Soccer Hosts Southern Miss In Exhibition Match Friday

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team will continue to prepare for their 2014 season opener with an exhibition match against Southern Miss, which is set to take place Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer Complex. Admission is free to the event.

Louisiana returns 17 letterwinners, including nine starters, and brings in 14 newcomers along with two redshirts from a season ago to form the 33-member roster. The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off their best season in program history following an 8-7-3 season record and a 5-2-1 mark in the Sun Belt Conference to tie for second in the league.

The Ragin' Cajuns return sophomores Yazmin Montoya and Annika Schmidt, who totaled 54 of the team's 93 points in 2013, to earn all-conference honors along with SBC Defensive Player of the Year Grace Howell-Harries. Howell-Harries along with Tina Sanchez are the only two seniors on a squad that includes just seven upperclassmen.

Southern Miss enters the 2014 season with 13 returning letterwinners, including eight starters, along with 14 newcomers. The Golden Eagles are coming off a 7-9-4 campaign in 2013, but struggled in Conference USA action with a 1-7-2 record. Seniors Brooke Hendrix and Anya Koren return as the top two offensive threats for Southern Miss. Hendrix led the team in assists with seven and totaled 15 points, second most on the team, while Koren added nine points for the Golden Eagles a season ago.

Louisiana opens the season on the road Friday, Aug. 22 with a 6:30 p.m. match against Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas, before heading to Southeastern Louisiana on Aug. 24 to take on the Lions in a 4 p.m. contest in Hammond.
