KOKSIJDE, Belgium – Former Louisiana men's tennis player Rick de Groot recently advanced to the semifinals of the ATP's Belgium F11 Future's event.
An all-Sun Belt Conference performer who helped the Ragin' Cajuns claim the 2014 Sun Belt Conference crown, de Groot paired with fellow Dutch player Romano Frantzen to claim a quarterfinal win (4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-8) over the Dutch duo of Griekspoor/Griekspoor after a bye in the round of 16 before falling to Gille/Vliegen of Belgium in the semifinals.
"Rick is working his way toward the top 300, having already gone from the 2000's when he started this summer to 1,100 ATP," Louisiana head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "He just needs to stick at it for another 12 months and push and I really believe this time next year he will be inside the top 500 ATP."
de Groot put up an 11-9 record a year ago in singles play, and paired with Jarred and Jake Wyman during the spring season to go 14-4 in doubles play.
He is the second of our players this summer to make a move inside the top 1100 ATP, so it is a great sign for our program that these guys are getting better," Jeffrey said. "We have had a very good summer as a program, probably one of the best ever. I cannot recall a time where our players have picked up 36 ATP points over the summer months."
