Volleyball's Red-White Scrimmage Set For Saturday

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana volleyball team will give fans their first chance to see this year's team on Saturday, when it hosts the third-annual Red-White Scrimmage at Earl K. Long Gym.
First serve is scheduled for noon, with admission being free.
The Ragin' Cajuns put together a 19-14 season a year ago - its highest win total since 1997 - and with a blended roster of youth and experience, have expectations of contending for the program's first-ever league crown in 2014 under seventh-year head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot.
Preseason all-Sun Belt Conference setter Andrea Hole returns for her senior season to direct the offense after finishing third in the SBC in assists a year ago. Some of her main targets will be junior outside hitter Sara Mossakowski, and seniors Kaylee Nemeth and Kelly Wiesmann.
Senior libero Caitlyn Auxilien returns after finishing in the top 10 in the league in digs in 2013, and middle blocker Chanelle Gardner could be primed for a breakout season after a true freshman season that saw her average a team-high 0.92 blocks per set.
That returning core will be joined this season by a 10-member class of newcomers, including eight freshmen and a pair of transfers.
"We have a lot of quality depth at every position," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "I feel that if I were to have to take one of the starters off, that we could replace her with another and not lose anything. That is a great luxury for us."
The Ragin' Cajuns officially open the 2014 season on Aug. 29-30 when they travel to Houston to compete in the Adidas Rice Invitational. Louisiana will open the two-day event on Aug. 29 against Fresno State in a 4:00 p.m. contest before resuming play on Aug. 30 against host Rice at 11:00 a.m. and UC Davis at 5:30 p.m.
Louisiana will open its home schedule on Sept. 5-6 when it hosts the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic. The Ragin' Cajuns will kick off the event with matches against Southern and Southern Mississippi on Friday, and against Nicholls and Northwestern State on Saturday.
