HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana scored three second half goals in a 3-0 victory over the Louisiana soccer team Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

After 55 scoreless minutes, the Lions (2-0) struck in the 56th after a goal by junior midfielder Gisenia Utreras off a penalty kick to give SLU a 1-0 advantage. In the 67th minute, junior midfielder Cheyenne Maxwell stretched the Lions' lead further with a goal from 20 yards out that pushed the Cajuns' deficit to 2-0 late in the match. SLU capped off the contest with a score in the 87th from freshman midfielder Maggie Ramsey for the 3-0 final.

"The home team wanted it more today," said head coach Scot Wieland. "The team made a couple costly mistakes today, and played with a lack of aggression offensively. With that said, we split on the road opening weekend and we did a lot of really good things. There is a lot to build on going forward."

Sophomore forward Yazmin Montoya and freshman forward Danielle DeRosa led the Ragin' Cajuns (1-1) with two shots and one on goal apiece. Ramsey led the Lions with three shots and two on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Sabadash (2-0) picked up the win for SLU with four saves while redshirt freshman Alexias Stricklin (1-1) was given the loss, also collecting four saves on the afternoon.

In the first half, both teams attacked early by each putting two shots on target in the first 10 minutes of action. Neither team was able to get any offense going in the second half of the period until Southeastern Louisiana's Katie Noonan put a shot on goal in the 42nd minute that was picked up by Stricklin.

With less than 20 minutes to go in the match, Louisiana continued to attack as freshman forwards Haley Boroch and DeRosa each put shots on target, but were saved by Sabadash to keep the Ragin' Cajuns from getting on the board.

Louisiana hosts McNeese State in its home opener Friday at 7 p.m. at the Cajuns Soccer Complex before traveling to Oxford, Mississippi, on Sunday to take on Ole Miss in a 1 p.m. match.
