Ragin' Cajuns Volleyball 2014 Preview: Liberos/Defensive Specialists

Returners: Caitlyn Auxilien
Newcomers: Shelby Romero
With plenty of firepower on offense this season, the Ragin' Cajuns will also have its mainstay from the past three seasons donning the libero jersey once again in senior libero Caitlyn Auxilien.
A three-year starter from Mandeville, Auxilien was seventh in the Sun Belt Conference last season in digs (4.18 dps) and enters this year third on the all-time rankings in digs at Louisiana with a chance to move even higher on the list this year.
"Caitlyn really came into her own this preseason, not only as a libero, but as a leader on the court," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "That is what we have been waiting on her to do for the last few years. She is finally realizing that role and utilizing her leadership skills to not only help herself, but to help us as a team."
One of her tasks, in addition to manning the back line, will be to help groom the Ragin' Cajuns next likely libero – Shelby Romero, a freshman from Hutto, Texas, just outside of the Austin area.
A setter at Hutto High School, Romero will provide depth as both a defensive specialist and setter this season with the intention of taking over the libero jersey in 2015.
She doled out more than 1,100 assists last year at HHS and was on the Under Armour High School All-America watch list, playing for Austin Juniors on the club circuit and playing on the team that won the 2013 USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championship in Dallas.
"Shelby is a really nice utility player who has never played libero, but we knew that when we signed her," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "We did that so that we could train a new libero behind Caitlyn, who has done a great job for us. It gives Shelby a year to learn from her. We also like that Shelby is an ex-setter, so she knows the court and knows the game and can set for us if we ever need her to."
