LAFAYETTE, La. – Freshmen Danielle DeRosa, Madison Duncan and Denice Emokpae all scored their first career goals for the Louisiana soccer team Friday night as the Ragin' Cajuns recorded a 3-0 shutout victory over McNeese State in their 2014 home opener.

After the Cajuns (2-1) had put two shots on goal in the first 17 minutes of action, Louisiana struck in the 18th minute as DeRosa split two defenders in the box and brought out goalkeeper Maggie Marks before striking for a 1-0 advantage.

Both teams remained quiet on the offensive side in the middle part of the first period before Duncan extended Louisiana's lead to 2-0, finding the right corner of the net with a shot from the top of the box in the 36th minute.

Following a save by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Alexias Stricklin, Emokpae inked her name in the scoring column with a goal in the 42nd minute, finding the right side of the net from inside the box to make it 3-0 at the half.

"The forwards are getting more comfortable. We're building that chemistry and earning that trust on the field," said head coach Scot Wieland. "Those were all balls played through the space and them running onto it. It's awesome to have three freshmen all get their first career goals on the same night. Defensively, we've been playing really well. We moved a couple of players around, and it's made a big difference."

McNeese State (1-2) attempted to make a comeback in the second half, outshooting the Ragin' Cajuns, 12-3, in the period, but junior goalkeeper Lindsey Stocks kept the Cowgirls from getting on the board by recording five saves in the half.

McNeese State placed nine of its 18 shots on goal while Louisiana had five of its nine on target. Stricklin picked up the win for the Cajuns, posting four saves in 45 minutes of action. McNeese State goalkeeper Maggie Marks was saddled with the loss, allowing three goals during the first period while recording two saves.

"I think from start to finish we played very composed," Wieland said. "Our passing and possession was really good. We kept the ball really well and kept our shape. The girls were working hard off the ball. I think the bonus today for the first time was we did that in the final third."

Louisiana returns to action Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest in Oxford, Mississippi, against Ole Miss.
