HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team showed well in their fall debut over the weekend, picking up a slew of wins at the two-day Eagles Nest Classic.

"It was our first event of the season and our goal is to get as much play as possible this fall and take each opportunity to grow and improve," head coach Greg Harkins said following the tournament. "We showed a lot of promise this weekend and will build on it as we prepare for our next tournament."

Freshman Elena Sava debuted well, capturing the singles title in Flight E with a first-round win over Alabama State's Matabe Akoachere before knocking off Southeastern Louisiana's Margaux Kaltenbacher in straight sets as well.

"Elena played with an intensity and determination that she will need to be successful at this level," Harkins said.

In all, the Cajuns picked up six singles victories on the event's first day before slowing on Day 2. Juliette Clement rebounded from a first-round loss to Southeastern Louisiana's Madina Vorotnikova to knock off Alabama State's Nicole Tekelova (6-3, 6-2) on Friday before falling to Southeatern's Dany Rygadas in the consolation final of Flight C.

Alex Way also found early success in Flight C, advancing past Northwestern State's Polina Ivanova in the first round before dropping consecutive matches to ULM's Jana Duhanova and Southeastern's Vorontikova.

Abby Johnson split her two matches of the weekend, earning a first-round win in Flight D over Southeastern's Natalie Durran (6-1, 6-0) before Southern Miss' Karina Gurgenyan got the better of her in the semifinal (6-4, 6-0). Lauren Dupuistook the consolation side of the Flight E bracket, falling to Southeastern's Kaltenbacher in the opener before getting past Alabama State's Akoachere in her second match of Friday.

Louisiana also fielded a trio of doubles teams, getting a late win on Saturday by the duo of Clement and Dupuis over Alabama State's pair of Irina Cvijovic and Brankica Orlovic.

The Cajuns will be back in action next weekend in Natchitoches, La., when it takes part in the Northwestern State Invitational on Sept. 26-27.
