Cajuns Golf In 14th At William H. Tucker Intercollegiate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team carded a score of 34-over par (610) through two rounds to finish day one in a tie for 14th at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate hosted at UNM Championship Course on Friday.
 
"It was a pretty frustrating day today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Naturally when anyone looks at this leaderboard it is not hard to see that this golf course is a great test and challenge. There were a lot of high scores posted by some very credible teams, including ourselves."
 
Host New Mexico leads the field with a 36-hole score of 22-under (554) shooting a team score of 11-under in each round. San Diego State (-7, 569), Texas Tech (-5, 571), New Mexico State (+5, 581) and UNLV (+10, 586) round out the top 5 teams after day one.
 
"The disappointing aspect is that we felt we were ready for this challenge and obviously we were not, both mentally as well as physically. That is something that we can't and will not accept of ourselves," Sliman added.
 
Gavin Green of New Mexico sits atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under (135) using a first round score of 65 to hold the lead through the first two rounds.
 
Senior Louis Kelly leads the Cajuns in a tie for 48th at 7-over (151). Thomas Strandemo is one stroke back in a tie for 55th at 8-over (152).
 
Fernando Cruz Valle is in a tie for 63d at 9-over (153), while Haraldur Magnus finished the day in a tie for 79th at 12-over (156). Paul San closed out the scoring for Louisiana in a tie for 84th at 15-over (159).
 
"I am certainly not giving up on this group," Sliman said. "We have a great opportunity tomorrow to improve our position and pick up some wins against some great completion. We greatly welcome the opportunity that we have tomorrow."
 
The Ragin' Cajuns are paired with Minnesota and UTEP in the final round with play slated to start at 8 a.m. MT. Live scoring for the final round is available on Golfstat.com.
