ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Ragin' Cajuns golf team posted a score of 22-over par (310) to finish the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in 15th place on Saturday. The event was hosted at the UNM Championship Course.
"This week was a good slap in the face in more ways than one," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We displayed a lack of mental discipline that you can not have if you expect to compete at a high level. I believe that this group certainly learned many valuable lessons this week. It is early in the season and the important thing is for all of us to get back hard at work with the desire to not see the lack of discipline in our games transpire in the future."
Louisiana closed out the tournament with a three-round score of 61-over (925).
Host New Mexico was the wire-to-wire champion finishing with a score of 15-under (849) after carding a 7-over (295) in the final round. Texas Tech (E, 864), San Diego State (+9, 873), TCU (+16, 880) and New Mexico State (+16, 880) round out the top 5 teams.
New Mexico's Gavin Green held on to win individual medalist honors with a 56-hole score of 9-under (207).
Thomas Strandemo was the Cajuns top finisher at the event placing in a tie for 41st at 11-over (227). Strandemo carded a 75 (+3) in the final round. Louis Kelly ended the day one stroke behind Strandemo in a tie for 47th at 12-over (228).
Fernando Cruz Valle and Paul San closed out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns as Crux Valle ended in a tie for 64th at 16-over (232), while San placed in 84th at 22-over (238).
"I am proud of my team, although we finished poorly, they represented our program well," Sliman added. "They learned a lot about themselves and are coming home better players."
Louisiana returns to action Oct. 4-5 as the Cajuns head to Baton Rouge for the David Toms Intercollegiate.
