LAFAYETTE, La. – Following a weekend split with a home-opening win over McNeese State and a loss to Ole Miss on the road, the Louisiana soccer team heads to Nicholls State on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest in Thibodaux before concluding the weekend at home Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against Texas Southern.
Last Weekend
- Louisiana defeated McNeese State, 3-0, Friday in the team's home opener before dropping a 5-1 contest on the road to Ole Miss on Sunday
- Three freshmen netted all four goals for Louisiana on the weekend. Forwards Danielle DeRosa (2) and Denice Emokpae (1) along with midfielder Madison Duncan (1) scored for the Ragin' Cajuns
- Danielle DeRosa leads Louisiana with five points and two goals this season
Scouting the Colonels
- Nicholls State is 2-2-0 on the season with wins over Southern Miss and UAPB
- The Colonels went 1-1 last weekend in Little Rock, Arkansas, dropping a 3-1 contest to UALR before defeating UAPB, 8-0
- Nicholls was picked to finish fifth in the Southland Conference
- The Colonels return junior forward Spencer Valdespino, the reigning SLC Player of the Year, who totaled 37 points and set single-season school records in goals, points and game-winning goals
- Valdespino was named to the SLC Preseason First Team while teammate Jess Coates was selected to the second team
- Nicholls is returning 17 letterwinners, including 10 starters, for its 2014 squad
Scouting the Lady Tigers
- Texas Southern is 0-4-0 on the season and has yet to record a goal
- The Tigers have dropped matches to North Texas, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, SMU and Southeastern Louisiana to begin the season
Preseason Accolades
- Louisiana was picked to finish second in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll, voted on by the league's 10 head coaches, behind 2013 NCAA Tournament participant South Alabama
- The Ragin' Cajuns totaled a league-high three preseason all-conference selections - Grace Howell-Harries (Senior defender), Yazmin Montoya (Sophomore forward) and Annika Schmidt (Sophomore forward)
- Howell-Harries also garnered SBC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors after earning the award following the 2013 season
Against Nicholls
- Louisiana is 6-2-0 all-time against the Colonels
- One of Nicholls' wins came last season in a 2-1 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns in Lafayette
- The last three matches against the Colonels have ended in a 2-1 score
- Louisiana last traveled to Thibodaux in 2011, falling 2-1. However, the Cajuns hold a 2-1 advantage over the Colonels in Thibodaux

- This will be the first meeting between the two programs

- Of the 10 states represented on the 2014 Ragin' Cajuns roster, eight players hail from the Golden State, the most from any state
- Louisiana welcomed four Californians to Lafayette this fall in junior college transfer Lindsey Stocks (Cypress), and freshmen Danielle DeRosa (Rocklin), Haley Boroch (Ontario) and Jorgie Smith (Fair Oaks)
- The Cajuns also have redshirt freshman Alexias Stricklin (Rancho Santa Margarita), sophomores Yazmin Montoya (West Covina) and Olivia Frace (El Dorado Hills), and senior Tina Sanchez (Chino Hills) that come from California
62 Straight and Counting...
- Senior defender Grace Howell-Harries has been a consistent leader for the Ragin' Cajuns for several seasons, and her numbers prove it
- Howell-Harries has started every game of her career, now at 62, which places her 10th all-time in career starts
- She also played every minute for Louisiana during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, and leads the squad this season with 339 minutes played
