Cajun Tennis Classic To Hold Kids Day

LAFAYETTE, La. – Participants in the upcoming Cajun Tennis Classic are expecting to welcome over 600 elementary schoåçol students to kick off the week of the Cajun Tennis Classic on Tuesday, September 16^th.

Students from Lafayette Parish Schools System have been invited to take part in a tennis demonstration from local professionals, including Lafayette's Chanda Rubin – formerly the No. 4 player in the world on the WTA Tour – and former Ragin' Cajun all-American Ashley Rhoney.

"To see the greatest player from Lafayette (Chanda Rubin), and other former collegiate greats such as Ashley Rhoney out here at Cajun Courts is exciting," Ragin' Cajun men's tennis head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "We are confident that this event will generate a lot of enthusiasm and interest to help showcase the Cajun Tennis Classic."

Area schools will bus elementary students ranging from 2^nd to 4^th grades, along with teachers to chaperone the event, on a trip to UL's Cajun Courts where many of the students will be introduced to tennis for the first time.

Tournament officials are asking for assistance from community volunteers, with an estimated 400-600 kids expected to be on site.

Students will be assigned to courts and a clinic will feature basic fundamentals of tennis, followed by an exhibition played by Rubin, Rhoney and other area professionals.

"This event will do so much for Ragin' Cajuns Tennis," Jeffrey said. "It is a great way for us to show the community what we are doing today, and where we are going in the future. Someday we want one of the children coming out to play for the Ragin' Cajuns, and days like this can start those dreams for these children".

Tournament play for the Cajun Tennis Classic is set for Sept. 18-21 at Cajun Courts, with the field consisting of eight of the top men's tennis teams in the nation, all of whom are nationally ranked.
