Jaguars Hot Shooting Stuns Cajuns
1/17/2015 10:52:00 PM | Men's Basketball
LAFAYETTE, La. – Shawn Long put in 22 points and pulled in a career-high 22 rebounds, but South Alabama shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the second half and came back from down as much as 15 points in the first half to upset the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns 89-82 on Saturday night at the Cajundome.
South Alabama (5-12, 3-4 SBC) trailed 25-10 with just over eight minutes to play in the first half before catching fire, hitting 55.2 percent from the floor for the game and canning 20 of 30 shots in the second half alone. Meanwhile, the Cajuns (10-7, 4-2 SBC) had their roughest shooting night of the year at home, hitting just 39.7 percent from the floor and 6-for-20 from three in seeing their 12-game home winning streak come to a close.
The loss negated an otherwise big statistical night from Long, who had a double-double by halftime. The junior big man hit just 6-for-18 from the floor, but was a career-best 10-for-13 at the foul line to fuel a 22-point night to go with his 22 rebounds. That rebounding mark is the sixth-best in UL history and just two shy of the highest single-game mark in the nation this season. It is just the fourth 20-point, 20-rebound game in the country this season, with Long joining Jahlil Okafor (Duke), Alan Williams (UC Santa Barbara) and Anthony Livingston (Arkansas State) in that category.
"We got off to a very good start, pushing the basketball against a very good offensive team," Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin said following the game. "We had a chance to really make a statement in the first half and build a bigger lead, but we didn't do it. We came out in the second half and did not execute and did not defend. We told the guys they were going to come back our fear came true, because they made nearly every shot."
South Alabama put five players in double figures, led by Ken Williams who hit 9-for-14 from the floor and finished with a career-high 28 points, including 14 points in a 54-point second half for the Jaguars. Taishaun Johnson picked up a double-double for USA as well, with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Louisiana had four players of their own in double figures with Brian Williams (13), Kasey Shepherd (13) and Jay Wright (12) joining Long. The Cajuns had just nine turnovers on the night, tying a season low; however, they forced just eight Jaguar miscues, one shy of an opponent's season low this year.
The Cajuns owned the glass 44-35, with half of those rebounds coming from Long, and 17-5 on the offensive glass.
Louisiana opened up the game on an 11-2 run in the first six minutes behind six points from Long and built the lead as to as much as 15 at the 8:25 mark on the second of two straight scores from Bryce Washington.
But the Jaguars responded and trimmed the lead to as little as 34-30 in just over six minutes of game time, hitting five of seven tries from behind the arc to claw back into the game.
They still trailed by just five with 2:16 until the halftime break, but UL scored the final eight points of the period, getting a three from Johnathan Stove and a triple from Shepherd just before the halftime buzzer.
Louisiana still led by as much as eight points early in the second half, before USA finally took its first lead of the game with 8:26 to play on a layup from Johnson to end a quick 7-0 run. Long responded with a three-point play and a three from Shepherd had UL up 66-65 with less than seven minutes to go; however, Barrington Stevens III gave the Jaguars the lead two possessions later and they never surrendered it.
The Cajuns hit just three field goals in the final six minutes of the game – a jumper from Wright and a three from Williams – getting nine of their last 16 points from the foul line. Meanwhile, the Jaguars came up with few empty possessions in the game's final minutes, building the lead to six on a bucket from Dionte Ferguson with under three minutes to play to cap a 12-5 run.
Despite the loss, the Cajuns still find themselves just a game out of first place in a close SBC leaderboard. They can move back into a tie for first place with a win on Monday when they host ULM, the league's lone one-loss team.
