Jaguars Rally Against Cajuns Again

1/29/2015 9:37:00 PM | Men's Basketball

MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns held a 10-point halftime lead, but for the second time this year could not hold it as South Alabama once again caught fire in the second period to complete the season sweep of the Cajuns with a 89-85 win at the Mitchell Center on Thursday night.

It was just the second time in 11 tries that Louisiana (11-10, 5-5 SBC) has not pulled out a win after holding a lead at the midway point, with both of those defeats coming at the hands of the Jaguars (7-14, 5-5 SBC) who have won six of the last seven meetings between the teams.

"We couldn't stop them in the second half," Louisiana head coach Bob Marlin said after the game. "But we give them up 63 percent in the second half and still have a chance to tie the game late. I was proud of the way the guys hung in there, but there were breakdowns in transition and they (South Alabama) made every shot again."

South Alabama shot 62.5 percent in the second period - after shooting 66.7 percent in the second period in the teams first meeting - and owned the glass after the Cajuns had held a 19-10 advantage on the boards in the first period. Shawn Long did all he could to keep the Cajuns in the game, scoring 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second period.

Louisiana trailed by seven points with a minute remaining, but the Jaguars missed three of their first eight foul shots in the final minute while Long nailed a pair of threes to get UL to within 84-81 with 31 seconds left. But Cajuns missed a three, turned it over and then the Jags hit their last four foul shots to close the game.

Kasey Shepherd tied his career high with five three-point buckets and added five assists. Devonta Walker had 11 points off the bench, while Johnathan Stove got his second start of the year and responded with 10 points in 28 minutes. But the Cajuns shot just 35.1 percent in the second half and could not take advantage of 20 offensive boards.

Taishaun Johnson led the Jaguars with 23 points, and was one of four USA players to score at least 16 points.  Ken Williams, who had a career-high 28 points in the team's first meeting, finished with 19 points.

Louisiana shot 53.1 percent in the opening half, leading the Jaguars by as much as 13 points in the first 20 minutes. Shepherd hit two of his three triples in the half on back-to-back possessions midway through the half as part of an 8-0 run that stretched a 17-16 lead to 25-16 with 9:17 to play.

Nine Cajuns found the scoring column in the half with Walker adding nine points off the bench, and Long chipping in with six on just five shots. South Alabama got to within six with just under four minutes until the break on a three from John Brown, but the Cajuns answered with seven straight points, five from Walker to push the lead to 43-30 before a three from Barrington Stevens III on the Jaguars final possession of the half.

Louisiana will now head to San Marcos, Texas, to take on Texas State for the first time this year on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. from Strahan Coliseum.
