LAFAYETTE – Playing their best volleyball so far this season, for the past week, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team welcomes Sun Belt Conference leaders Arkansas State and Appalachian State to Earl K. Long Gym over the weekend.

Louisiana (4-11, 0-3 Sun Belt) faces Arkansas State (13-1, 4-0 Sun Belt) on Friday, Oct. 2, then meets Appalachian State (10-4, 3-0 Sun Belt) on Saturday, Oct. 3. Both matches begin at 6:30 p.m.

The first 50 children 12-and-under at Friday's match receive a commemorative volleyball. On Saturday, the Ragin' Cajuns are hosting their annual Dig Pink Night and encourage fans to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.

The Ragin' Cajuns are coming off a five-set, comeback win at Southeastern Louisiana on Tuesday. Sara Mossakowski's career-high 20 kills led the way to ending the team's six-match losing streak.

Louisiana hit its season-best in a road match, finishing the SLU contest with a .275 hitting percentage. It was the third straight match that the Cajuns raised their hitting percentage going from .087 at UT Arlington, to .176 at Texas State, .223 vs. ULM followed by .275 at SLU.

"We have hit better in the last few matches, which is what we've needed to do," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "We're controlling our errors much better."

Playing at Earl K. Long Gym has brought out the best in the Cajuns. Through five matches the squad is hitting .223 and has held opposing teams to a .168 hitting percentage.

Both Arkansas State and Appalachian State provide a stern test. The Mountaineers (.281) and Red Wolves (.261) rank first and second, respectively, in hitting percentage in the Sun Belt Conference.

"This weekend we will get an idea of where we're at," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "If we play as well as we have recently, and add a little more offensive production, these could be really fun matches."

The recent improved stretch of play has featured several career-high performances. St. Martinville's Chanelle Gardner posted a career-high 20 kills last Friday vs. ULM, then on Tuesday at SLU, in addition to Mossakowski's milestone, Katey Kyle (12 kills) and Nia Antoine (13 kills) each landed career-high numbers.

Mossakowski (2.73 kills/set) and Gardner (2.58 kills/set) provide the one-two punch on offense for Louisiana, averaging a combined 5.31 kills per set. Gardner is hitting .401 (72 K, 13 E, 147 TA) at E.K. Long Gym this season, producing a .548 clip (20 K, 3 E, 31 TA) in last appearance in the facility back on Sept. 25 vs. ULM.

Perhaps the key catalyst to the upswing in productivity has been the addition of Lafayette native and Acadiana High product Nia Antoine into the rotation. Antoine has generated 28 kills, on just 54 attempts, to the tune of a .481 hitting percentage the past three matches as a member of the rotation.

Stacey Reilly (3.41 digs/set) and libero Sydney Davis (3.37 digs/set) anchor the back row. At Southeastern, sophomore Shelby Romero was mixed in and contributed eight digs helping trigger the Ragin Cajuns rally to victory.

Arkansas State climbed to No. 23 in this week's edition of the PrepVolleyball.com Poll. Freshman Carlisa May has captured the most attention recently, winning her third straight SBC Freshman of the Week honor on Monday. May is second on the team in total kills with 160 and leads the way with a 3.48 kills per set average while her hitting percentage of .317 is second best.

Appalachian State visits ULM on Friday before arriving at Earl K. Long Gym. The Mountaineers enter the weekend on a six-match winning streak and own a win over Clemson in addition to extending Virginia and Missouri to five sets. Paige Brown, a four-time SBC Setter of the Week winner, guides the offense averaging 11.44 assists per set.
