Eagles Keep Cajuns Out of Rhythm, Win in Four

10/16/2015 9:38:00 PM | Volleyball

LAFAYETTE – Georgia Southern hit .248, threw up 14 blocks and limited the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team to a 46 percent rate on sideouts in claiming a 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22) win Friday evening in a Sun Belt Conference match at Earl K. Long Gym.

Leading 7-6 in the third set, Georgia Southern (8-13, 3-6 Sun Belt) used a 5-0 run to create breathing room en route to taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

After pulling into a 13-all tie after an Eagles attack error in the fourth set, the Cajuns (5-16, 1-8 Sun Belt) were unable to generate a side out the next five rallies and Georgia Southern took control 18-13.

The Ragin' Cajuns rallied back with four straight points, getting kills from Sara Mossakowski, Chynna Brooks and Hanna Rovira and an Eagles setting error to trim the deficit to 18-17. However, a service error by Chanelle Gardner gave GASO a sideout and a subsequent kill from Cathrine Murray gave the visitors a three-point edge they rode to the match-clinching 25-22 win.

The loss was the third straight for Louisiana, overall, and fourth straight at Long Gym. Friday's match was the lone meeting between the two teams this season.

Louisiana closes out its weekend homestand on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., against Troy. The contest is a rematch of a four-set win by the Trojans last Saturday in Troy.

Sara Mossakowski led Louisiana with 10 kills – reaching at least eight kills for the 11th time in 14 starts – and added 10 digs for her second straight match with a double-double (fourth of season). Rovira and Keely Hayes each contributed eight kills and Gardner added six.

Hayes nearly recorded a triple double as she scooped seven digs and dished out 25 assists to go with her eight kills.

Sydney Davis accrued a team-high 15 digs for the Ragin' Cajuns. The freshman from Baton Rouge reached double digits for the second straight match and 13th time in 21 matches.

Murray topped the Eagles with 16 kills on 39 swings a .308 hitting percentage. Stephanie Spencer, who threw down six kills in the fourth set, joined Murray in double figures with 11 kills. Alex Beecher led GASO defensively with a match-high 17 digs.

The Eagles hit .385 (13 K, 3 E, 26 TA) in the opening, key to erasing an early 6-2 deficit and claiming a 25-16 win.

Louisiana led from start-to-finish in the second set, evening the match. The Cajuns stormed out to a 4-0 lead with back-to-back kills from Gardner, a Rovira ace and Cordell kill.

Murray drew GASO within two, 16-14, with a kill midway through the frame. The Cajuns responded with a 5-0 run, beginning with back-to-back kills from Hayes, to pull ahead 21-14 and then held off a late rally by the Eagles.

With the loss, the Ragin' Cajuns fell two games behind Georgia Southern in the SBC standings for the eighth and final spot in the league's postseason tournament being held Nov. 20-22 on the Eagles home court in Statesboro, Ga.
