LAFAYETTE -
Trailing 1-0 with nearly 7 ½ minutes left in regulation, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns soccer team restored their hopes of upsetting second-place South Alabama, but fell late in double overtime on Friday night at the Cajun Soccer Complex.
The Cajuns (7-5-1, 1-2 SBC) and Jaguars played a scoreless 27 minutes before South Alabama's Charde Hannah beat Louisiana goalkeeper Cosette Morche (5-4) on a shot fired at the right corner of the goal in the 28th minute.
Louisiana's defense finished the first half strong, stopping four shot attempts by South Alabama to keep it a one-score match going into the intermission.
The second half was highlighted with three yellow cards being issued, two against South Alabama. The Cajuns had three shot attempts from the 63rd minute to the 67th minute, but were unable to come up with the match's equalizer.
Morche made a key save at the 81-minute mark, denying South Alabama's Danielle Henley.
In the 83rd minute, Louisiana forward Ashleigh Cade sent a corner kick from the lower right corner, finding junior midfielder Taylor Kennedy whose shot was saved but rebounded back into play and cleaned up by senior forward Elizabeth Manuel from three yards out, evening the score to 1-1.
The two conference foes advanced to an overtime period with neither team ending the dual in the five-minute window.
In the second overtime, the Jaguars and Cajuns each missed a shot attempt in the 102nd minute and 104th minute, respectively. The match was decided when South Alabama's Rio Hardy kicked the ball inside the goalie box to Charde Hannah who knocked the ball into the left corner, ending the double-overtime affair.
"It was one heck of a double-overtime college game," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Scot Wieland said. "I am very proud of the 107-minute effort from the team, but am disappointed for the girls that we didn't get the result we were hoping for.
"Anything less than this effort going forward will not be acceptable. If we give this kind of effort for the remainder of the season, I like our chances [to be successful]."
The Cajuns will end the weekend with a 1 p.m. home match against Troy this Sunday, Oct. 4.
