All-Around Effort Carries Red Wolves Past Cajuns
10/2/2015 9:11:00 PM | Volleyball
LAFAYETTE – Arkansas State posted 15 kills each set and hit .351 for the match in securing a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-13) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in a Sun Belt Conference match Friday evening at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Red Wolves threw up 12 blocks and the Ragin' Cajuns swings weren't as crisp leading to 22 attack errors and a .010 hitting percentage for the hosts.
ASU (14-1, 5-0 Sun Belt) held a 45-23 advantage in kills. The Ragin' Cajuns (4-12, 0-4 Sun Belt) were held to a negative hitting percentage in first and third set.
Chanelle Gardner led the Cajuns with six kills and a .308 hitting percentage (6 K, 2 E, 13 TA). Nia Antoine added four kills while Jessica Bartczyszyn, Keely Hayes and Katey Kyle each contributed three kills.
The trio of Drew Jones (13), Darby Graff (11) and Carlisa May (11) combined to produce 35 of Arkansas State's 45 kills. Boosted by libero Markie Schaedig's match-high 18 digs, ASU held a 50-34 edge.
The Ragin' Cajuns wrap up their weekend homestand on Saturday hosting Appalachian State (11-4, 4-0 Sun Belt) at Earl K. Long Gym. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
A quick 5-0 spurt to begin the opening set gave the Red Wolves a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Cajuns closed the deficit to 5-2 after a block by Sara Mossakowski and Antoine, but a 7-1 run by the Red Wolves extended the visitor's breathing room.
Hayes provided the Cajuns the lead, 3-2, in the second set. Three errors by ASU kept the Cajuns ahead 6-4, but four straight points for the Red Wolves provided the final lead change.
A service error by Kelsey Reis allowed the Cajuns to pull within a point, 8-7. ASU avoided a momentum shift by following up a Chole Cordell service error with an ace, block and back-to-back kills to forge ahead 13-7.
Three consecutive kills, one apiece from Graff, Reis and Jones, staked the Red Wolves to a 4-1 lead in the final set. The frame got away from the Ragin' Cajuns as the squad committed attack errors on the next three rallies.
With the win, Arkansas State stretched its current win streak over Louisiana to four matches. Friday's match marked the lone meeting between the two conference mates this season.
