Rallies in First Two Sets Guide Trojans Past Cajuns

10/23/2015 9:06:00 PM | Volleyball

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Little Rock took advantage of a season-high tying 29 attack errors committed by the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in claiming a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) win in a Sun Belt Conference match Friday evening at Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, Ark.

Aided by five Cajuns attack errors, the Trojans (9-11, 5-5 Sun Belt) dug out of an 8-6 hole in the first set with eight unanswered points. The hosts avoided a setback in the second set, and took a 2-0 lead in the match, after a 16-all tie was broken with consecutive miscues by the Cajuns (5-19, 1-10 Sun Belt).

After intermission, Little Rock started the third set with a 6-1 spurt and led the entire frame en route to clinching the match.

The Trojans hit .214 (39 K, 15 E, 112 TA) while the Cajuns were limited to a -.017 percentage (27 K, 29 E, 121 TA). Little Rock's 13 blocks were the cause of nearly half of Louisiana's attack errors.

Louisiana showed grit on defense, averaging its Sun Belt-best of 17 digs per set (51 total) led by freshman Sydney Davis' match-high 18 digs. Davis reached double figures for the fifth straight match and 16th time in 24 contests overall.

The Cajuns played without Sara Mossakowski (back injury) for a second straight match. Stacey Reilly and Chloe Cordell topped the team with six kills apiece.

Miona Milovanovic posted a match-high 10 kills in leading the Trojans offense. Carolee Dillard's six blocks (1 BS, 5 BA) plus five from both Edina Selimovic (0 BS, 5 BA) and Veronica Marin (0 BS, 5 BA) steered the frontline defense.

Friday's match was the first of three remaining on the road for the Cajuns this season. Next weekend, Louisiana wraps up the season's road slate at Appalachian State (Oct. 30) and Georgia State (Oct. 31), then concludes the regular season with three matches at Earl K. Long Gym in November.

The Cajuns jumped ahead early in the first set with a kill from Hanna Rovira on the match's first rally followed by a block thrown up by Chanelle Gardner and Reilly resulting in a 2-0 lead. An ace from Rovira increased the lead to 4-1, then after a pair of Trojans scores back-to-back kills by Reilly brought the lead back to three points.

Little Rock turned the tables on Louisiana, using an 8-0 run to grab a 14-8 advantage. The Trojans posted three blocks during the scoring spree, the first evening the score at 8-all and the other two coming on consecutive rallies to stretch the lead to 12-8.

The Cajuns could get no closer than five points, the final time at 21-16 on a kill by Nia Antoine. The Trojans scored on four of the final five rallies to post a 25-17 win and take the lead in the match.

The second set featured six ties and two lead changes. The Trojans protected an early lead by snapping a 4-all tie with a kill by Taylor Lindberg for the start of a 7-1 run that opened an 11-5 lead.

Louisiana reeled off five straight points to climb back into the set at 11-10. The Cajuns would take leads of 15-14 (bad set by Lindberg) and 16-15 (Gardner kill), but each time the Trojans recorded a sideout to prevent the visitors from pulling away.

After a Lindberg kill erased Louisiana's final lead, the critical attack errors followed by a Selimovic kill put Little Rock ahead to stay at 19-16.

The Cajuns were dealt their sixth straight defeat after the Trojans led from wire-to-wire in the final set.

Friday's matchup was the lone meeting this season between the two programs and the start of a stretch of six straight Sun Belt matches to close out the regular season for Louisiana.
