NEW ORLEANS – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team dominated the first day of the Big Easy Tennis Classic at the University Tennis Center from University of New Orleans Friday. The Cajuns singles and doubles teams combined for an 8-1 record.
"Our performance today was the best that I have seen a group play in two years," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "Their form coming into this weekend was fantastic. For everyone to get three matches in this weekend to boost their confidence was a positive.
"All in all, this was pretty successful tournament [on the first day]. There are a lot of good teams playing down here this weekend and this gave us a lot of confidence."
In Flight 1 of the singles bracket, junior Will Huyton defeated Troy's Francisco Yim Kim, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals before falling to Daniel Merker of Southern Miss.
Huyton's teammates, senior Jake Wynan, junior Coleman Wahlborg and sophomore Vlad Kramarov both advanced to the Flight 3 singles semifinals and look to advance to the finals Saturday. Wahlborg advanced 6-1, 6-4 over Xavier's Tushar Mandlekar, while Kramarov moved on after defeating New Orleans' Nicolas Kramer, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10.
Wynan advanced to the Flight 2 singles semifinals, topping Mikhail Esipov of Southern Miss, 6-4, 6-0.
In the doubles bracket, Huyton and Kramarov teamed up to defeat Nicholls State's Evan Karatzas and Kieran Cronin, 7-6 and Troy's Tomas Fernandez and Vaclav Slezak, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. The UL duo fell to Jacksonville State's Samuel Kellett and Gabriel Pansera, 6-4 in the semifinal round.
The Cajuns will wrap up the Big Easy Tennis Classic on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
