MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Despite being only one of four teams to not post a double-digit score over par on Monday, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team slipped down one spot into seventh with an overall score of 22-over par (598) after the second round at the Intercollegiate at The Grove hosted at the par-72, 7,368-yard Grove Golf Course.
Â
The Cajuns carded a score of 9-over (297) in the second round and sit eight strokes back of Lipscomb for second place. No. 26 Kentucky leads the tournament with a two-round score of 5-over (581). Lipscomb (+14, 590), Middle Tennessee (+17, 593), College of Charleston (+18, 594), and Cincinnati (+20, 596) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
"We had some good play today even though we didn't go in the direction that we wanted," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Hopefully this whole group can come together and finish this tournament out they way we have finished out the four previous. The conditions here haven't been the best, but that is something that we can overcome if we are mentally tough. We have a chance to come out tomorrow and catch a lot of good teams."
Â
Tyler McDaniel of Kentucky used a second round score of 2-under (70) to take over the individual lead with a 36-hole score of 5-under (139).
Â
Ragnar Gardarsson paced the way for Louisiana as he moved up 20 spots into a tie for 14th after shooting a 72 (E) on the day to post an overall score of 5-over (149).
Â
"It was nice to see Ragnar shoot even par on a tough course in difficult conditions," Sliman added. "He had a clean front nine and was able to bounce back from a couple mistakes on the back to finish out the round strong."
Â
Freshman Triston Elston continues to hold his position in the top 10 after two rounds. Elston is currently in seventh at 3-over (147) after carding a 77 (+5) on the day.
Â
Fernando Cruz Valle also moved up in the second round as he is tied for 21st after picking up three strokes in the final six holes sparked by an ace on hole 15. Cruz Valle has a two-round score of 6-over (150).Â
Â
Senior Haraldur Magnus climbed into a tie for 31st at 8-over (152) after tallying a 74 (+2) in the second round.
Â
"Both Haddi and Fernando did a good job of not letting things spin out of control from them today," Sliman said. "They both could have easily let the round get away from them, but they stayed mentally tough and closed out the round under par in the final six holes."
Â
Louisiana is paired with Wisconsin and WKU for the final round. Play gets underway at 9 a.m. with teams starting off of holes one and ten. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
