Cajuns Clinch Eighth Seed in SBC Tourney With Loss at ULM

MONROE, La. -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team raced out to a 2-1 lead in the first half, but were unable to hang on, falling in double overtime at ULM by a 3-2 final.Â
The Cajuns (8-9-2, 2-6-1 SBC) clinched the No. 8 seed in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and will face No. 1 seed South Alabama next Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m. in Atlanta.Â
Just four minutes into the match, ULM's Mary Ashton Lembo put the Warhawks ahead, 1-0, but the Cajuns responded with a pair of scores in the next 40 minutes from sophomores Ashleigh Cade and Whitney Taggart. Cade's goal was from 30 yards out that found the top left portion of the ULM net. Louisiana's second goal by Taggart was assisted by MacKenzie Higgins and Jorgie Smith.
The Cajuns took a 2-1 lead into the intermission. The Warhawks evened the match in the 65th minute courtesy of a goal by Antonia Land.Â
Louisiana had a pair of looks in the 67th and 74th minutes, but were saved by ULM goalkeeper Brooke-ly Scroggins, forcing the match into overtime.
In the first overtime frame, the Cajuns defense did not yield a shot attempt to the Warhawks. Junior Natalie Newman delivered a header in the 93rd minute, but her shot was saved by Scroggins. Freshman Sarah Kozlowski looked to end the match in minute No. 97, but Scroggins again came up with another save, sending the match to a second overtime.Â
ULM ended the affair in the 104th minute when a header attempt was deflected off the post and put back in to the net by Kelly O'Dwyer.Â
The Cajuns outshot the Warhawks, 24-17, including 12-5 in the first half. Cade led Louisiana with six shot attempts, four coming on goal.
Freshman Cosette Morche (6-7-1) saved eight shots.Â
