Mountaineers Fight Off Cajuns Charge in Sweep
10/30/2015 8:05:00 PM | Volleyball
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State completed a season sweep of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-17) win Friday evening at the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-20, 1-11 Sun Belt) made the Mountaineers (18-4, 11-0 Sun Belt) grind out the victory. Louisiana averaged a season-high 21.7 digs per set (65 total) and forced App State into an average of 46 attacks per set (138 total).
The Ragin' Cajuns stormed back from an early 8-2 deficit in the final set and nearly extended the match past a third set.
A 15-10 App State lead vanished as Louisiana scored five unanswered points to forge a tie. A kill by Nia Antoine and an ace from Keely Hayes began the run, then after a block – which Antoine was a part of – the exact sequence that ignited the run capped it off.
An over-the-shoulder dump kill by Paige Brown ended the Cajuns run. After a service error evened the score at 16-all, Brown set up Jess Keller for a kill that kept the Cajuns from claiming the lead once more.
An attack error put Louisiana behind 18-16, but Stacey Reilly leaped up for a block solo that returned the deficit to a single point. After the block, Keller began App State's final push with a kill – the first of seven straight points that closed out the match.
Friday's match marked the start of the Ragin' Cajuns' final road trip of the season. The squad takes in its final road game on Saturday in Atlanta against Georgia State (5-16, 1-10 Sun Belt) at the GSU Sports Arena beginning at 5 p.m. (CDT).
The trio of Antoine, Hayes and Reilly led the Louisiana offense with five kills apiece. Sydney Davis reached double digits in digs for the sixth straight outing, finishing with a match-high 19 digs.
The Mountaineers, who held a 45-25 advantage in kills, received 12 kills each from Emily Corrigan, Ashton Gregory and Keller.
Louisiana had its current losing streak extended to seven matches. App State won its 14th straight match and kept pace with Arkansas State (13-0 Sun Belt) which also remained unbeaten in Sun Belt play with a sweep of Georgia Southern.
The teams traded scoring runs at the start of the first set. The Mountaineers reeled off five straight points for a 5-1 lead. The Cajuns answered with five unanswered of their own, the final tally a dump kill by Hayes resulted in a 6-5 advantage.
An App State timeout led to a service error by Chanelle Gardner that broke the Cajuns' serve, then the Mountaineers rode the serve of Meghan Mahoney for six straight points which proved to be the decisive run of the frame.
The Cajuns kept pace offensively with the Mountaineers holding a slim 13-10 edge in kills. Louisiana was hindered by 10 attack errors, half of the miscues coming on App State's five blocks.
The Cajuns were unable to keep pace with the Mountaineers offense in the second set as the hosts threw down 18 kills in racing to a 2-0 lead in the match. The Louisiana defense worked hard, forcing App State to produce 52 swings to capture the set.
A kill by Reilly and App State attack error pulled Louisiana into a 4-all tie. The Mountaineers followed with a 5-0 run, keyed by four kills, which swung the momentum to their side.
Scores on three straight rallies – kills by Antoine and Katey Kyle followed by an attack error from Keller – cut the Cajuns deficit to 10-8. App State picked up a sideout on a kill by Keller, then scored on the next four rallies to stretch the lead to 15-8.
