Cajuns Upended by Georgia State in Road Finale
10/31/2015 10:57:00 PM | Volleyball
ATLANTA – Georgia State rebounded from an opening-set loss to claim a 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-14) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team Saturday evening at the GSU Sports Arena in Atlanta.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-21, 1-12 Sun Belt) were in position for a 2-1 lead in the match after kills by Stacey Reilly and Chanelle Gardner provided a 24-22 lead in the third set. However, the Panthers (6-16, 2-10 Sun Belt) reeled off four straight points to steal the set.
Georgia State carried the momentum shift into the fourth set, out-hitting Louisiana .257-.025 in closing out the match with a 25-14 win.
Saturday's match marked the final regular season road match for the Ragin' Cajuns. The regular season concludes with a three-match homestand at Earl K. Long Gym that begins Nov. 6-7 against UT Arlington and Texas State and ends with a rematch against Georgia State on Nov. 13.
GSU's win continued the trend of the home team's success in the all-time series that began when the Panthers joined the SBC in 2013. The home team has won all five matchups in the series.
Gardner led the Cajuns in kills with 10 on 36 swings. Nia Antoine added eight kills on a .368 hitting percentage and Reilly contributed seven kills.
Sydney Davis garnered match-high honors in digs for the third straight match and reached double figures for the seventh straight match by scooping up 27 digs.
The Cajuns defense continued its strong play, collecting 74 digs (18.5 per set). The squad averaged above 17 digs set for the third straight match.
Kristina Stinson paced the GSU offense with a match-high 21 kills on a .400 percentage (21 K, 3 E, 45 TA). Deidra Bohannon posted a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. Kitan Ajanaku was the third Panther to reach double digits in kills with 11.
After methodically working to erase a deficit from the match's opening serve, the Ragin' Cajuns were the first team to claim a set.
A block by Gardner erased the Cajuns' final deficit of the set and knotted the score at 21-all. She then combined with Sara Mossakowski on a block on the ensuing rally for a 22-21 lead.
GSU answered with a kill from Ajanaku tying the set at 22-all. The Cajuns received a kill from Keely Hayes on the next serve, the first of three straight kills which led to victory.
The Panthers climbed back into the match by racing out to a 10-3 lead in the second set. GSU hit .312 and held a 14-6 advantage in kills for a commanding 25-11 win that evened the match.
