LOS CABOS, Mexico – Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns senior golfer Haraldur Magnus matched his career-best round carding a 67 (-5) in the second round of the Cabo Del Sol Intercollegiate to move up 14 spots into seventh place on Monday. The tournament is being played at the Cabo del Sol Ocean and Desert courses.
Magnus is three strokes back of Santa Clara's Tyler Kerston for the individual lead with a 36-hole score of 3-under par (141). Kerston has posted back-to-back rounds under par to lead the event at 6-under (138).
A native of Reykjavik, Iceland, Magnus played bogey-free golf on the final nine holes of the day tallying birdies on four of his last four holes.
As a team, the Ragin' Cajuns moved up one spot into sixth after carding a score of 1-under (287) fueled by the play of Magnus and Fernando Cruz Valle.
"It was nice to see Haddi (Haraldur) and Fernando step up and lead the team today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Fern played very much in control, and with the determination that we expect from a seasoned player and leader. I am very pleased and proud of Haddi. Haddi has played his last six holes each day under par. He birdied four of his last five holes today, showing that he does not give up. I am very proud of the leadership these two young men are showing. Hopefully it can be contagious to the bottom of the lineup and the guys at home.
"We are a very good team and it is important for all 11 guys on this team to start expecting that out of each other. We have a big day tomorrow, one that I have confidence in this group finishing strong."
Cruz Valle bounced back from a tough start on Sunday to post a 69 (-3) in the second round and move into the top 25 to sit in a tie for 21st at 3-over (147).
Freshman Triston Elston is three strokes back of Cruz Valle in a tie for 33rd at 6-over (150) after posting a score of 75 in consecutive rounds. Ragner Gardarsson is in a tie for 36th at 7-over (151), while Andrew Navarrete rounds out the scoring for Louisiana in a tie for 43rd at 11-over (155).
Georgia State continues to hold onto the team lead at 6-under (570) despite a furious charge by Georgia Southern who used a score of 5-under (283) to move into second with an overall score of 4-under (572). UT Arlington (-1, 575), Cal State Northridge (+2, 578) and Santa Clara (+4, 580) round out the top 5 teams.
The Cajuns are paired with Cal State Northridge and Santa Clara for the final round. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com.
