South Alabama Snaps Cajuns Road Win Streak
10/9/2015 10:36:00 PM | Volleyball
MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama used a 6-0 run to break free from a 7-all tie in the fourth set and close out a 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team Friday evening at Jaguar Gym in Mobile, Ala.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-14, 1-6 Sun Belt), winners of their previous two road matches after falling behind 2-0, attempted to follow a similar script after a 25-23 win in the third set. Back-to-back kills by Keely Hayes snapped a 15-all tie and the Cajuns led the rest of the way, avoiding the sweep.
Hanna Rovira threw down a kill to draw the 7-all tie in the fourth set, but a service error by Chole Cordell gave serve back to the Jaguars (9-8, 3-3 Sun Belt) who promptly reeled off the set-changing rally.
Louisiana moved within four points, 14-10, after consecutive USA miscues, but the hosts used a 9-2 run to open a double-digit lead and prevent a Cajuns comeback.
The loss broke the Cajuns two-match road win streak (five-set wins at SLU, at ULM) and evened the team's record on their current three-match road trip at 1-1.
Louisiana travels to Troy, Ala., on Saturday, Oct. 10 to conclude the road trip. The match with Troy gets underway at 6 p.m., in Trojan Arena.
Sara Mossakowski and Chanelle Gardner led the Cajuns with eight kills apiece. Cordell contributed seven kills and Rovira added six.
Hayes, filling in for setter Jessica Bartczyszyn who suffered a hand injury in practice on Thursday, dished out 24 assists in addition to producing five kills on 17 swings. She also led in digs, finishing tied with Mossakowski for team-high honors with 12.
The tandem of Mechell Daniel (17 kills) and Savannah Stewart (11 kills) generated 28 of the Jaguars' 49 kills. Daniel carried USA to a 2-0 lead in the match, tallying 14 kills through the first two sets.
Louisiana was held below .100 hitting for the second straight match (.095). The Cajuns were held below .150 each of the first two sets, meanwhile the Jaguars hit .250 (1st) and .370 (2nd) in building the 2-0 edge.
Stewart began the match with a kill and service ace for a 2-0 USA lead. After a kill from Gardner landed the Cajuns' first point, the hosts fired off kills on the next four rallies for a 6-1 advantage.
The Cajuns trailed by five-plus points until a string of three straight points – Hayes kill and two aces – trimmed the Jaguars' lead to 18-14. USA took advantage of four Cajuns miscues over the next five rallies to stretch the lead to 22-16.
After three ties over the first six rallies, the Jaguars took control of the second set with a five-point spurt initiated by two straight kills from Daniel for a 5-3 lead, followed by three straight Cajuns attack errors.
Friday's contest was the lone scheduled meeting between the two teams this season. USA's win spoiled the Cajuns bid for back-to-back wins in the series for the first time since 2005-06 and was the Jaguars eighth triumph in the past 12 meetings.
