LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team (2-1) will spend the Thanksgiving holiday in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout from November 27-28. The Cajuns look to rebound from a narrow 52-51 loss at the hands of the University of Houston last Sunday with a pair of games this weekend. Friday's game will feature Louisiana and the University of Arkansas (2-2) for a 1:30 p.m. CST tip-off. The Sacred Heart Pioneers (0-3) await the Cajuns on Saturday, November 28 at 1:15 p.m. CST.
The Louisiana offense features three of the conference's Top 7 scorers through the first three games of the season. Junior Jaylyn Gordon (16.0 ppg) and seniors Keke Veal (14.3 ppg) and Kia Wilridge (14.0 ppg) have been the three top producers in the offense.
The Cajuns and Arkansas Razorbacks have not met since December 16, 2004 (82-68 Arkansas victory). Arkansas leads the all-time series, 3-1. Louisiana and Sacred Heart's lone meeting was back on November 29, 2003, a 75-60 win for the Pioneers.
Setting the Scene: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (2-1) women's basketball team enters the week looking to rebound from a final minute 52-51 loss at Houston last Sunday.
The Cajuns defense has been strong through the first three games of the 2015-16 season, holding opponents to just 52.7 points per game, third-lowest in the Sun Belt Conference.
Louisiana travels to Guaynabo, Puerto Rico this week for the San Juan Shootout. They are scheduled to play the University of Arkansas this Friday, Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m. CST and will end the weekend with a 1:15 p.m. CST tip-off against Sacred Heart on Saturday, Nov. 28.
The Razorbacks come into Friday's matchup with a record of 2-2, having lost their last two games. Junior forward Jessica Jackson has posted a double-double average of 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game (both team highs). Junior guard Kelsey Brooks is averaging 9.8 points per contest and has dealed out a team-best 15 assists.
Sacred Heart begins the San Juan Shootout winless at 0-3 this season, with two of those losses coming at home. Their offense features a trio of scorers averaging double-digit points this season in Hannah Kimmel (17.3), Adaysha Williams (15.3) and Alissa Tarsi (11.0). Kimmel is also pulling down a team-high 9.0 boards per game. The Cajuns are 0-1 against Sacred Heart in the all-time series, losing 75-60 back on November 29, 2003.
Preseason Honors: Seniors Keke Veal (First Team) and Kia Wilridge (Second Team) were selected to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. Last season, Veal earned All-SBC Preseason honors for the third straight season. The honor marked Veal's debut on the All-Sun Belt Conference Preseason First Team. Last season, she paced the Cajuns offense with an average of 14.9 points per game. The Opelousas, La. native has led the Cajuns in scoring in two of her three seasons. She was also named the 2015 Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) MVP after averaging a team-high 21.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest, helping lead Louisiana to the WBI Championship.
For Wilridge, it is the second consecutive Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team honor of the Crowley, La. native's career. She is coming off a season in which she tallied 12.3 points per contest. She was also tied for the second-most blocked shots on the defense with seven. Wilridge was the first Cajun to record 100-plus steals in a season since 1989-90 (Kim Perrot).
Coach Brodhead at the Helm: Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead is in his fourth season at the helm of the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program, finishing with 23 wins last season, the most in a single season since 2006-07 (25). Brodhead guided the team to 15 victories at home in 2014-15, a program record. He is currently the third-winningest head coach in Cajuns history (49). He needs nine wins to pass Ross Cook (57) for second on the program's all-time list.
Winning the Turnover Battle: Through three games this season, the Cajuns are plus-8.3 in turnover margin, good for second in the Sun Belt Conference. They have committed 42 turnovers, but have taken the ball away from opponents 67 times, an average of 22.3 turnovers created per game, also second in the conference.
Welcome Back: Returning from redshirt seasons are senior Brooklyn Arceneaux and junior Sylvana Okde. In 2013-14, Okde averaged 10.9 points and drained a team-high 74 three-pointers. That season, Arceneaux finished as the team's second-leading scorer (among players in at least 25 games played) averaging 10.5 points and adding 5.2 rebounds per contest. Arceneaux has averaged 4.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in three games as a starter this season. She also leads the team with five steals. Okde has yet to appear in a game this season.
Gordon for Three: Junior guard Jaylyn Gordon is currently tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference with six three-pointers, an average of 2.0 per game. She sits in seventh-place all-time in Cajuns history with 116 three-point field goals made, and needs 28 to pass Onna Charles (143) for sole possession of sixth in program history. She has also fired off 419 career three-point attempts, trailing current teammate Sylvana Okde (435) by 17 for sixth on Louisiana's all-time list.
Veal Seeing Double: Senior guard Keke Veal has scored in double-figures in 17-straight games dating back to last season.
What's Next? The Cajuns will play a conference game at ULM next Thursday, December 3 for a 5 p.m. tip-off.
