With the 2015-16 basketball season quickly approaching, RaginCajuns.com takes an in-depth look at the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball roster leading up to the team's first exhibition Monday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. against LSU-Alexandria. Today, we take a look at the forwards and centers in the second of a three-part series. The Cajuns, who went 23-12 during the 2014-15 season and claimed the 2015 WBI Championship, return nine letterwinners and five starters for the upcoming season.
Returners: Adrienne Prejean, Simone Fields, Jasmin Mills
LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program brings back a pair of frontcourt players to this year's squad in senior Adrienne Prejean and sophomore Simone Fields. The 2015-16 Cajuns roster offers versatility and a number of lineup options that head coach Garry Brodhead can turn to in a game.
"We are still getting a feel for where we will end up with some of our hybrid guards/forwards," Brodhead said. "This has been the best hybrid group that I have had as a coach, which is very exciting."
Prejean enters her final season as a Ragin' Cajun. The Lafayette native played in a career high of 35 games last season, including 31 starts. In three separate games, she pulled down nine rebounds, while coming up with a career-best 19 steals. For the second consecutive season, she shot above 40% from the floor, making 43.4% (43-of-99) of her attempts.
"Adrienne is a hard-nosed player who comes in and does whatever we ask of her," Brodhead commented. "She is normally guarding one of the better players [on the other team]. She rebounds well and her being comfortable in our system is big for us. She is the quarterback along with Kia [Wilridge] on our defense and her being a team captain is important to both her and us as a program.
Last season, Prejean set a career-high in minutes played with 45 in a 68-65 double-overtime victory at ULM last February. She also tied her career high in steals with three in a 16-point win at home against Georgia State.
"She is one of those hybrid players who brings energy to the team and works hard to improve their game," Brodhead said. "I believe grit is something you win with, and that's what Adrienne brings to our team."
Fields was a strong contributor to the Cajuns rotation last season, playing in all 35 games including 31 starts at forward. She chipped in 6.4 points and pulled down 4.5 rebounds per contest. Her 4.5 boards were tied with Kia Wilridge for the team lead. She also came up with 23 steals.
"Simone has a lot of ability, she just needs to continue to work and believe in her teammates," Brodhead said. "She is very agile, and has improved with using her hands [on defense]. We just need to give her opportunities to score and want to give her more touches inside the paint."
Due to a knee injury, senior forward Jasmin Mills will be out indefinitely. Last season, the Belle Rose, La., native averaged 12.5 minutes in 10 games, scoring 3.1 points per game as a reserve.
"I think this is the first year we can say we are one of the top teams in the conference with versatility," Brodhead mentioned. "We are starting to compile a team with the group that we have. It's been a process, but I think we are right where we need to be in terms of contending for a conference championship."
