Cajuns Unable to Catch Mavericks, Fall in Three
11/6/2015 9:14:00 PM | Volleyball
LAFAYETTE – UT Arlington raised its hitting percentage each set, finishing at .361, in claiming a straight sets (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team in a Sun Belt Conference match Friday at Earl K. Long Gym.
The Mavericks (17-9, 8-6 Sun Belt) hit .261, .316 and .545 in succession. The Ragin' Cajuns (5-22, 1-13 Sun Belt) were held to a negative hitting percentage (-.034) in the first and third set and finished at .067.
Quick starts, 5-0 in the opening set and 6-0 in the third set, and a 15-10 edge in kills in the second set were key to UTA's triumph.
The Mavericks did not trail throughout the entire match. When the Cajuns forged an 8-all tie in the second set, back-to-back kills from Qiana Canete gave the visitors the edge they needed to claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
Friday's match marked the start of a three-match homestand at Earl K. Long Gym to conclude the 2015 regular season for Louisiana. The homestand continues Saturday at 6:30 p.m., against Texas State.
Chanelle Gardner topped the Cajuns in kills for the second straight match, finishing with eight kills on 17 attempts. Sara Mossakowski produced six kills on 19 attempts. Nia Antoine and Hanna Rovira each chipped in four kills.
Sydney Davis totaled 11 digs, reaching double figures for the eighth straight match and 19th in 27 overall.
Stacey Koch threw down a match-high 11 kills on 20 swings to lead UTA. Canete joined her in double digits with 10 kills on 20 swings.
Louisiana nearly dug its way out of the 5-0 hole in the opening set, cutting the deficit to 10-9 after a kill by Antoine and ace from Mossakowski on the ensuing rally. Kills from Cassidy Wheeler and Marisah Ingram jumpstarted a 7-2 run for the Mavericks which marked the visitor's final push.
The Cajuns forced three ties, the last at 8-all, in the second set. Canete snapped the final tie with kills on back-to-back rallies, then the set slipped away from the Cajuns after three straight errors on set attempts stretched the Mavericks lead to 15-9.
UTA took advantage of not just the 6-0 start in the third set, but 10 Cajuns attack errors. By the time Louisiana found its offense – four of five kills coming from Gardner – the Mavericks were holding a commanding 21-8 lead.
The loss was the ninth straight for Louisiana dating back to Oct. 10 at South Alabama.
The Mavericks, who won in straight sets in Arlington back on Sept. 18, completed the 2015 season sweep of the Ragin' Cajuns. UT Arlington also avenged a straight sets loss that it suffered in the last visit to Earl K. Long Gym on Nov. 14, 2014.
