Waves use 19-4 run in second half to pull away

MALIBU, Calif. – Jett Raines scored 21 points to lead four players in double figures and Pepperdine used a 19-4 run in the second half to pull away and defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns, 79-59, in a non-conference game on Friday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Stacy Davis posted a double-double for Pepperdine (7-4) with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Jeremy Major added 13 points and Lamond Murray, Jr., 10. Louisiana (3-6), which led 34-33 at the half, shot a season-low 30.6 percent (19-for-62) from the floor, including 8-for-29 (27.6 percent) in the second half as Pepperdine outscored the Ragin' Cajuns, 46-25, in the second half.

Louisiana trailed 41-39 after a Shawn Long bucket with 16:33 remaining in the game but that would be as close as the Ragin' Cajuns would get as buckets by Davis and Major pushed the lead to 45-39. After Bryce Washington scored for the Ragin' Cajuns to cut the lead to 45-41 with 15:17 remaining, Pepperdine scored the next 12 points as Davis scored on a layup, Major drained a 3-pointer, Raines added a pair of free throws and Shawn Olden sank a pair of free throws.

Davis, who finished 7-for-14 from the floor and 2-for-3 from long range, capped the run as his 3-pointer gave Pepperdine a 57-41 lead with 12:31 remaining in the game.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored the game's first six points as Kasey Shepherd and Johnathan Stove each hit jumpers and Long added a pair of free throws. A bucket by Jay Wright with 17:31 remaining in the first half gave the Ragin' Cajuns an 8-2 lead, but Louisiana would miss its next six shots from the floor.

Hayward Register snapped an 18-18 tie with a 3-pointer and Steven Wronkoski scored on a driving layup for a 23-18 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half.

Pepperdine would come back and take a 33-30 lead on a layup by Amadi Udenyi with 1:23 remaining in the first half, but the Ragin' Cajuns would score the final four points of the half as Long scored on a short jumper and Wright connected on a pair of free throws.

Long recorded his 58th career double-double for Louisiana scoring 15 points and grabbing 14 rebounds while Wright finished with 11 points. Register finished with eight points for the Ragin' Cajuns with Tyrone Wooten coming off the bench to add seven.

Louisiana will return to action on Monday, Dec. 21, when it entertains former Sun Belt Conference rival New Orleans in a 7 p.m. contest at the Cajundome. Tickets are available by calling the Cajundome Ticket Office at (800) 745-3000 or on-line at RaginCajuns.com.
