Cajuns' Five-Game Win Streak Snapped at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns' bid for their second-consecutive 8-1 start was ended Saturday night, as they fell, 79-62 to Louisiana Tech at Thomas Assembly Center.
The Cajuns (7-2) offense was led by a season-high 23 points from senior Keke Veal. Junior Jaylyn Gordon added 17 points, five assists and three steals.
In the early stages of the game, Louisiana grabbed a 5-2 lead following a three-pointer from freshman Jordan Alexander at the 6:32 mark of the first quarter.
The lead would not last long, as Louisiana Tech followed with an 8-2 scoring surge, capped by a three-pointer by Tiara Davenport. Gordon ended the first quarter with a jumper to close the gap to three at 14-11.
Senior Kia Wilridge tied the game at 14-14 just 1:15 into the second quarter on a three-point play, but four straight points by the Lady Techsters put the Cajuns back in a four-point hole.
Louisiana's lead was cut to 21-20 after a three-pointer from Alexander and a free throw by Gordon, but eight straight points by the Lady Techsters stretched the lead back to eight at 28-20 at the 4:07 mark of the second stanza.
The Cajuns scored eight of the final 12 points of the first half to close the gap to 32-28 at halftime. Gordon accounted for six of the eight Louisiana points. The Cajuns deposited 10 points off Louisiana Tech turnovers in the quarter.
Louisiana Tech came out of halftime scoring the first eight points of the third quarter, putting the Cajuns in a 40-28 hole. They maintained the double-digit point lead until the 4:10 mark of the quarter after a three-pointer by Veal made it 47-39. The Cajuns continued to chip away, moving to within 51-47 with 2:04 left on a layup by Veal.
The two teams traded buckets for the next three possessions until Jasmine Leblanc dropped in a layup to make it 57-49 in favor of Louisiana Tech with 41 seconds on the third quarter clock. Veal answered with the game's next five points to pull the Cajuns to within three at 57-54 by the conclusion of the third stanza.
The Cajuns received 17 bench points in the third quarter, 15 belonging to Veal.
Louisiana Tech scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to move ahead by seven at 61-54. The Cajuns came back to score on the next possesion to cut the deficit to five, but were unable to draw any closer for the remainder of the contest.
The Cajuns received 31 points from the bench and collected 27 points off Louisiana Tech turnovers.
Wilridge picked up three assists, bumping her career total to 254. She is eight helpers shy of passing Alicia McDaniel for sole possession of sixth place on the Cajuns' all-time list.
Veal's team-high 23 points extended her double-digit points scored streak to 23 games. The 23 points gives her 1,190 for her career, three shy of moving past Alyson Habetz for sole possession of sixth place on the Cajuns all-time scoring ledger.
Louisiana will conclude their 2015-16 non-conference schedule with a home matchup against Alcorn State on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Cajundome.
