Senior Keke Veal pours in a team-high 22 points against the Braves, helping the Cajuns improve to 8-2 this season

LAFAYETTE -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns ended their 2015-16 non-conference schedule with a 73-61 win over the Alcorn State Braves Tuesday night at the Cajundome.

Senior Keke Veal moved into sole possession of sixth place on the Cajuns (8-2) all-time scoring list (1,212 points) following a 22-point performance, one shy of matching her season high. Junior Jaylyn Gordon added 14 points to go with team highs in rebounds (7) and assists (6), while adding three steals. Sophomore Simone Fields chipped in 10 points to go with five rebounds.

"This is why we played the game," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Garry Brodhead said. "We wanted to work on some things and see where we were at before we get into conference play."

Louisiana raced out to a 14-5 lead in the first 3:31, aided by a combined eight points from Veal and Gordon.

A 10-5 run by the Braves over the next 4:05 cut the Cajuns lead to 19-15. Alcorn State pulled to within 20-17 with just over a minute left after a jumper by Norianna Haynes, who poured in a game-high 39 points.

The Cajuns shot 61.5% (8-of-13) from the floor in the first quarter.

A jumper by Haynes made it a 20-19 game to open the second stanza, but Alcorn State was unable to draw any closer for the rest of the game.

The Cajuns outscored the Braves, 16-7 and took a 36-26 lead with 2:05 left in the first half. Junior Taylor Washington and Gordon both hit three pointers during the Cajuns scoring surge.

The lead stood at 40-31 going into halftime. The Cajuns hit 3-of-4 three pointers and also outrebounded Alcorn State, 18-12 in the first half.

The Braves scored the first four points of the third quarter to close to within five, but the Cajuns scored 15 of the game's next 17 points, aided by nine points from Veal. Leading 55-37, the Cajuns traded buckets with the Braves over the next three possessions and held a commanding 60-41 advantage at the close of the third quarter.

Louisiana collected 10 points in the paint in the third quarter and scored eight more off Alcorn State turnovers.

The lead for the Cajuns never dipped below 11 points for the remainder of the game. Eight of the team's 13 points in the final stanza came from the second unit. Washington scored a season-high seven points on a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor (1-of-1 from three-point range).

"We needed to play this game tonight [with the nine-day layoff]," Brodhead said. "We have to defend better and pressure the ball which we will work on before we play Appalachian State on Saturday."

The Cajuns will dive into the conference portion of their schedule beginning this Saturday against Appalachian State. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at the Cajundome.
