Women's Tennis Picks Up Weekend Win

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team had a busy schedule over the weekend with three matches in two locations, coming away with a win over Jackson State while falling to Southern Miss and New Orleans.

The Cajuns first made their way to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a pair of meetings with Southern Miss and Jackson State on Friday before a Saturday trip to New Orleans to face UNO.

"They were hard-fought matches this weekend," Louisiana head coach Greg Harkins said. "We are working on consistency and endurance to finish matches. There is a balance for us to work towards. We will work on it the next few days as we prepare for Wednesday's match against Southeastern Louisiana."

Elena Sava and Melissa Burckhartt were pushed to the limit, but came out with a (9-8) win over Claudia Castella at No. 2 doubles; however, the Golden Eagles took the doubles point with wins at both the Nos. 1 and 3 slots.

The Cajuns nearly rallied for an overall win, though, with a solid performance in singles play. Wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles had things all knotted at 3-3 with only the No. 5 court left to play. But USM's Alex Kitchen edged Abby Johnson (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) for the clinching point.

Kelly Drew kept her season slate unscathed with her fifth overall win in singles play, and second straight at No. 2 singles, needing little time to get by Lisa Schneider (6-2, 6-3) in straight sets. That scored the first point for UL, but the Cajuns still found themselves down 3-1 with three matches to play.

Sava then finished off Castella at the No. 3 spot (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) to cut the advantage to 3-2 before Alexandra Way tied it up at 3-3 with a (6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-3) win in the No. 3 spot.

UL followed that up with a 4-0 sweep of Jackson State later in the afternoon, taking  the doubles point before scoring three more wins in singles play.

Way and Lauren Dupuis earned the first of two needed wins on the doubles side at No. 3 over Julie Angermann and Karina Ono (6-2), with Sava and Johnson finishing the job at No. 2 with a (7-6 (4)) win over Daria Butorina and Ilona Zuishiluk.

Nelo Phiri, Sava and Johnson all picked up wins on the singles side to finish off the sweep. Phiri dropped down to the No. 2 slot in the lineup and disposed of Zuishiluk (6-1, 6-1), while Sava needed little time to get rid of Butorina (6-1, 6-2) at No. 3 singles. Johnson then clinched the win with a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Siriporn Phakmad on the No. 5 court.

UL then made their way to New Orleans on Sunday for an afternoon meeting with the Privateers, but the Cajuns were only able to pick up a pair of points in singles play, falling 5-2 to UNO.

Drew moved up to the No. 1 spot against JSU, but after not finishing her first match against the Tigers, stayed unbeaten with a (7-6, 6-1) win against UNO's Marta Sans.

The Cajuns will now return home for a home match on Wednesday against Southeastern Louisiana. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. at Cajun Courts.
