Louisiana Joins Top 5 in NFCA Poll

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns softball team joined the Top 5 of the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll for the first time since 2012, marking a climb in the poll for a third straight week.

The Ragin' Cajuns (14-0), who debuted at No. 9 in the preseason rankings, landed at No. 5 in this week's NFCA Top 25 poll. It is Louisiana's highest ranking since coming in at No. 5 in the May 1, 2012 poll.

Since the season's opening weekend, Louisiana has risen to No. 7 (Feb. 10), No. 6 (Feb. 17) to current No. 5 (Feb. 24), in succession.

Michael Lotief's squad remained at No. 6 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. It's the second straight week at No. 6 and third straight week as a member of the Top 10 (preseason ranked No. 9).

Louisiana completed its third undefeated tournament run of the season by posting a 5-0 mark in last week's Ragin' Cajuns Invitational. The Cajuns defeated Iowa, Hofstra, Missouri State and McNeese State. The Cajuns extended their season-opening undefeated start to 14 games – the program's best start since opening the 2012 season at 29-0.

Future ranked opponents for Louisiana include: No. 2/2 Oregon (April 24-25), No. 4/5 Alabama (Feb. 27-Mar. 1), No. 9/10 Baylor (April 10-11) and No. 24/24 South Alabama (March 7-8).

No. 5/6 Louisiana returns to action with a scheduled Top 5 showdown against No. 4/5 Alabama Friday-Sunday, Feb. 27-March 1 at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The games are being broadcast online by SEC Network+ though ESPN3.com.
