FOR STARTERS
The Ragin' Cajuns closed out the month of January with a win at Texas State and will now look to open up the month of February on the same foot when it plays host to first-year Sun Belt Conference member Appalachian State for the first time since 1989 on Thursday at the Cajundome.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns led by as much as 16, but still had to play comeback as they closed the game on a 14-1 run to pick up a 72-63 and win over Texas State on Saturday evening at Strahan Coliseum.
Freshman Johnathan Stove paced the Cajuns with 19 points, 15 coming in the first half, while Jay Wright dished out 10 assists with just a single turnover from his point guard spot. Meanwhile, Shawn Long picked up his second double-double of the weekend with 17 points and 13 rebounds while playing the final 9:31 with four fouls.
Bryce Washington got his second straight start and responded with nine rebounds and a pair of blocks, and the Cajuns made plenty of hay at the foul line where they hit 20-of-23.
They needed every one of them to hold off a Bobcats team that was attempting to avoid dropping its fifth consecutive game. Texas State got 20 points from Kavin Gilder-Tilbury, including three triples during a 19-4 run that gave the Bobcats a lead midway through the second period.
UP NEXT
Louisiana will be in front of a national audience on Saturday when it gets its first look at UT Arlington in a game to be aired on ESPN2 at 1:00 p.m. Roy Philpott will have the TV call of the game, aided by color man Craig Robinson, the former head coach at Oregon State. UL will then turn its attention to the road once again with a two-game road swing at ULM and Troy, beginning February 12 in Monroe.
• Freshman Johnathan Stove became the seventh Cajun to lead the team in scoring in a game with 19 points at Texas State. Stove hit his first six shots from the field and scored 15 points in the first half on his way to setting a career high.
• Shawn Long's is 34-for-41 (.829) from the free throw line in his last six games. He is averaging 22.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in those games, while shooting .543 from the field and .500 from three.
• The Cajuns were outrebounded for just the fifth time this season on Saturday at Texas State, but it was the first time in those five games the Cajuns have pulled out the win.
• Saturday's win at Texas State was also the the first time this year in 11 tries that the Cajuns have rallied from a deficit at the 5-minute mark of the game.Â
• The Cajuns pulled in 37 rebounds against the Jaguars, with 20 coming on the offensive end. It is the first time the Cajuns have had more offensive rebounds than defensive this season, and the first time since December 30, 2010 against Denver that they have lost a game when doing so.
