Cajuns In Tenth After First Day Of Oak Hills Invite

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns golf team opened the 2015 spring season with a two-round score of 24-over par (592) to finish the first day of the Oak Hills Invitational in tenth place at the par 71, 6.765-yard Oak Hills Country Club.
 
"I think the first round jitters got the best of us today," head coach Theo Sliman said. "We are a good team and we are a deep team, but we have to play to our potential. We need to have a group effort, and one or two people playing well isn't going to be enough. I know this team is eager to get back on the course tomorrow and continue to get better. We have a great opportunity to move up the leaderboard and come away from this tournament with some momentum."
 
Sophomore Fernando Cruz Valle paced the Cajuns with a score of even par (142) to finish the day in a tie for sixth place. Cruz Valle battled back in the first round to shoot even par with three birdies in the final nine holes after falling to 3-over.
 
No. 5 Baylor leads the tournament at 4-over (572) with host UTSA five strokes back in second at 9-over (577). Sam Houston State (+14, 582), Houston Baptist (+14, 582) and Wichita State (+16, 584) round out the top five teams.
 
Kyle Jones of Baylor, Logan Boatner of Sam Houston State and Preston Stanley of Houston Baptist are in a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard at 4-under (138). Stanley and Boatner each carded a tournament-best round of 66.
 
Both Haraldur Magnus and Christian Verrougstraete registered a score of 8-over (150) to end up in a tie for 45th place after 36 holes.
 
Senior Louis Kelly is currently in a tie for 55th at 10-over (152), while Ross Davis rounded out the scoring on day one in a tie for 67th at 13-over (155.)
 
The Cajuns are paired with Central Arkansas and Denver for the final round with play getting underway at 8:15 a.m. tomorrow off of hole 10.
