Cajuns Drop Two In Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team dropped a pair of road matches over the weekend, falling 6-1 on Saturday at Troy and 7-0 to Samford.
The losses drop the Cajuns record to 3-6 on the season, and 0-1 against Sun Belt Conference opponents.
Saturday afternoon saw Troy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with wins in all three doubles points before taking five of the six singles points.
Abby Johnson picked up the lone win of the weekend for the Cajuns at Troy, outlasting Linnea Skymberg at No. 5 singles (6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5)). UL nearly scored another point in singles play at the No. 6 spot in the lineup as Melissa Burckhartt rallied after dropping the first set to Brooke Durden to stretch the match to a deciding third set where she lost a narrow (6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8)) decision.
The Cajuns were not able to get going a day later at Samford, a team who has been in the ITA national rankings earlier in the season. The Bulldogs got wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, including a (8-0) win in the top spot by the tandem of Stephanie N'tcha and Carita Moolman, ranked No. 57 in the nation as a duo, over Nelo Phiri and Elena Sava.
Phiri stretched N'tcha to three sets at No. 1 singles, taking the first set before falling (4-6, 6-1, 6-0). Sava also took a set from Iva Parapunova at No. 5 singles before dropping the match (6-3, 3-6, 6-1). From there the Bulldogs did not surrender a point, closing out the match 7-0.
The Ragin' Cajuns will now return home for a Wednesday doubleheader at Cajun Courts, first hosting McNeese State at 1:00 p.m., followed by a 4:30 p.m. first serve against Alcorn State.
