LAFAYETTE, La. – Coming off a doubleheader sweep of Alcorn State earlier this week at Cajun Courts, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team hits the road once again for three matches this weekend as part of the 57th Rice Invitational in at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Louisiana (11-10) will square off against another battle-tested field in Houston, opening up with a rematch of the HEB Tournament of Champions finals against No. 40 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday before taking on George Washington later that afternoon. The Cajuns will close out the weekend with a meeting with the host Owls on Sunday morning.
Damian Farinola has been a steady cog for the Cajuns this season, leading the Cajuns with nine singles wins, including a streak of five in a row earlier this year. He and doubles partner Edgar Lopez have won each of their last two doubles matches, including a win over the duo of Soares/Dojas last weekend from Texas Tech, a pair ranked No. 24 in the nation.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters the weekend on a hot streak, winning their last eight straight matches to run their record to 11-3 on the season. They are currently ranked No. 40 in the latest ITA national rankings and are led by Peter Nagy, who comes in with a national ranking of 70 in singles play.
The Colonials have won two of their last three dual matches and enter the weekend at 6-9 overall with four of their defeats coming at the hands of ranked opponents. GW opened the season ranked among the top 60 teams in the country and is 4-3 since falling out of the top 75.
The host Owls round out the weekend field and will be energized coming off a 4-1 upset win over No. 19 Northwestern on Wednesday, the first win by Rice over a top-20 opponent since 2009. Rice has also spent some time in the national rankings this season, peaking at No. 60 and has faced 11 ranked opponents this year. They had dropped five matches in a row – all to opponents ranked in the national top 70 – before Wednesday's win over the Wildcats.
First serve against the Islanders on Friday is set for noon in Houston, with UL's match against George Washington slated to begin at 5:00 p.m. The Cajuns will close things out against Rice with that match scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
