Dunbar, Withrow, Scheurich earn Most Improved Awards

LAFAYETTE – Fifth-year head coach Mark Hudspeth put his squad through final preparations on Friday as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team worked out for the final time before holding its annual Red-White Spring Game on Saturday at Cajun Field.

The Ragin' Cajuns worked out for 90 minutes in shorts and helmets going through nearly every situation, while spending the majority of time focusing on special teams.

Louisiana, which will hold its Red-White Scrimmage at 5 p.m. at Cajun Field, looks to fill many areas on both sides of the ball, as well as in special teams.

"I'm looking forward to our guys competing tomorrow," Hudspeth said. "We've still got a lot of questions that we need to find answers to. Our guys will play hard and compete. It will be a great day for our fans to come out and get a glimpse of the 2015 Ragin' Cajuns."

All three quarterbacks – Brooks Haack, Jalen Nixon and Jordan Davis – will see work with the first-team offense during the scrimmage, which will consist of four 8-minute quarters and a scoring system that will award points for touchdowns (6), field goals (3), turnovers (5), three-and-out situations (3), red zone stops (3) and special situations. Many areas on the depth chart are still in contention, including on the offensive line and secondary.

"We've got a lot of young offensive linemen that will get a lot of quality reps," Hudspeth said. "For the quarterbacks, I want to see who can manage the game, move the chains and put the ball in the end zone. We've got to make some decisions in the secondary, so a lot of those guys will be rotating with the first team. It will be a chance for some young guys to get noticed and move up the depth chart."

Following Thursday's workout, Hudspeth and the coaching staff presented Karmichael Dunbar (Defense), D'Aquin Withrow (Most Improved Offense) and kicker Dylan Scheurich (Non-Scholarship) with the Most Improved Awards for their work during spring practice.

"Karmichael Dunbar has had a really great spring," Hudspeth said of the defensive lineman. "I'm very proud of that young man because he's been patient, he's had such a great attitude, has been a team player and he loves UL. He's really earned that through his hard work.

"D'Aquin Withrow, to me, has really developed nicely and has been that tackle that we thought he could be. He was able to get a lot of reps this spring due to injuries on the line, and Dylan Scheurich had a great spring and, right now, is going to be able to compete for the starting position."

Admission to the Red-White spring game is free with gates at Cajun Field opening at 4:30 p.m. Fans attending the game will receive free 2015 schedule posters and schedule cards (while supplies last). In-game activities will be available and fans will be able to send questions to head coach Mark Hudspeth via Twitter.
