Cajuns Fall To McNeese State, Alcorn State

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team took the could not get on track on Wednesday, falling in a pair of matches to McNeese State and Alcorn State at Cajun Courts.

The Cajuns (3-8) took the doubles point in the second match of the day against the Lady Braves (5-4) and got a singles win from Melissa Burckhartt, but Alcorn took four of the other five singles points to leave with a 4-2 win. Earlier in the day McNeese State kept the Cajuns off the board for a 4-0 victory.

McNeese State moved to 3-4 on the season with its win in the day's opening match. The Cowgirls jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a pair of wins in doubles play to claim the match's first point. Julia Kral and Hannah Brett picked up the first win with a (7-5) win over Abby Johnson and Melissa Burckhartt before Sarah Jurakova and Vivien Borbely knocked off Alexandra Way and Lauren Dupuis (8-6).

Anastastasija Trubich tallied the first point of singles play for McNeese State, (6-0, 6-2) over Lauren Dupuis on the No. 6 court, followed by a win by Brett (6-1, 6-1) over Elena Sava at No. 3 singles. Klaudia Gawlik then finished things off with a (6-4, 6-3) victory against Nelo Phiri on the feature court.

Way and Dupuis rebounded from the first match of the day with a (8-2) win over Alcorn State's Patricia Normand and Anna Kazarina at No. 3 doubles in the second match. Phiri and Sava then clinched the doubles point by getting (8-3) the top duo for the Lady Braves, Aida Kelic and Ivana Bobceric.

But after Burckhartt gave UL a 2-0 lead by rolling by Kazarina (6-3, 6-0) at No. 5 singles, the Lady Braves only allowed one set the rest of the way. Phiri took the opening set at No. 1 singles from Kelic, but was tied at a set apiece when the match was clinched.

Alcorn managed wins at Nos. 2, 3 and 4 singles before Normand finished things off with a (7-5, 6-4) win on court five.

The Cajuns will next be in action on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. when it hosts Air Force before traveling to Tulane on March 10.
