Offensive, defensive line shine in first workout in pads

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team wrapped up its first week of spring practice on Saturday, holding a two-hour workout in pads on the Ragin' Cajuns practice fields.

The Ragin' Cajuns continued installation of their defensive scheme while getting a look at several newcomers who will vie for spots on the depth chart.

"It was a pretty solid day," head coach Mark Hudspeth said. "I saw some young kids start to show a couple of flashes that they may be able to help us. There were a couple of things that we did today that were uncharacteristic. The offense put the ball on the ground a few times and we've got to clean that up. Defensively, we continued to improve by trying to get to our gaps and trying to do the right things.

"But more importantly right now is that I love the attitude of our guys. I know that those things they didn't do well will come around if we keep these great attitudes and keep working."

With the loss of two starters on both the offensive and defensive line, Louisiana will look for returning veterans, along with several redshirt freshmen, to make an impact for the 2015 season.

"I thought (defensive end) Marquis White had a good day today," Hudspeth said. "I've been waiting for him to turn it on a little bit and did a great job of attacking. I want to see if he can consistently do that again. The offensive line had a good day today. They came off the ball and got after it during our Oklahoma drill and I was pretty proud of that group too."

Quarterbacks Brooks Haack, Jalen Nixon and Jordan Davis continued their battle to be the Ragin' Cajuns signal-caller as each took turns directing the offense.

"Everybody is competing, nobody is separating themselves yet and I anticipate what each one of them can do (next) Saturday in a live scrimmage situation," Hudspeth said. "It's something I'm looking forward too."

Louisiana continued installation of its new scheme under defensive coordinator Melvin Smith with the unit making several key plays in team drills.

"They're learning the scheme well," Hudspeth said. "The coaches are doing a really good job of their installation and teaching the scheme. Our kids are getting better fundamentally. We've still got a ways to go, but we're early in camp and the kids are really dialed in."

Louisiana will return to practice on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. All practices are open to members of the Quarterback Club and RCAF.

The Ragin' Cajuns will hold their annual Red-White Spring Game on Saturday, March 28 at Cajun Field. Louisiana will open the season on Sept. 5 at Kentucky.
