Rain Shortens Cajuns Match Against Mavs
4/8/2015 10:13:00 AM | Men's Tennis
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns themselves positioned for an upset of No. 70 UT Arlington on Sunday before Mother Nature intervened, causing the teams to leave the match unfinished, tied at 3-3, on Sunday at Cajun Courts.
The teams had battled to a 3-3 deadlock through doubles play and five singles matches and Damian Farinola held a 3-1 lead in a deciding third set against Daniel Armengol at No. 2 singles before the inclement weather showed up. Officials postponed the final won/loss decision until finally leaving the match unfinished on Tuesday.
A win would have been the third of the year against a team currently in the national-rankings, while the no-decision locks up the No. 1 seed in the SBC Tournament for the Mavs (12-6).
Louisiana positioned itself well early in the match by taking the doubles point, highlighted by a No. 1 win (8-7) by Farinola and Edgar Lopez over Johnathan Gonzalez and Mario Muniesa, a duo ranked No. 73 in the nation. That win, coupled with a dominating (8-2) victory by Coleman Wahlborg and Jarred Wynan over Daniel Echeverry and Sebastian Ermicioiu on the No. 2 court gave the Cajuns an early 1-0 advantage in the match.
The Cajuns added a pair of wins in singles play as well, starting with Will Huyton's straight-set (6-2, 6-3) decision over Stefan Williams at No. 3 singles. Jarred Wynan also pulled out a convincing (6-2, 6-3) on the No. 4 court over Gonzalez.
UT Arlington got points back with wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles, in addition to Ermicioiu rallying from dropping the first set to Lopez to steal the match (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 singles Farinola rallied from dropping the first set to take the second set and staked himself to a 3-1 advantage in the deciding third set before the rain showed up, forcing the match to remain without a decision.
Louisiana will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when it hosts Southern Miss at Cajun Courts in a match that will serve as Senior Day. The Cajuns already hold a 4-0 win over the Golden Eagles this season, knocking them off in the semifinals of the HEB Tournament of Champions in early March.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will then begin April 17 in New Orleans.
