Girouard Tabbed To Capital One Academic All-America Baseball Teams
6/4/2015 11:06:00 AM | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas – Senior designated hitter Tyler Girouard became the third player in program history to earn academic All-America honors as he was selected to the 2015 Capital One Academic All-America ® Division I Baseball Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.
Â
Girouard, a third team selection, joins Kevin Cantrelle (1998) and Tommy Bates (1991) on the list of Ragin' Cajuns to earn the distinction.
Â
"Any All-America award is a great honor, but ultimately they are here to get their degree and move on into corporate America because baseball is only going to last them so long," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "I think this is an enormous award for him because it's not only what he has done on the field as an athlete, but he is being rewarded for what he has done in the classroom. We always tell our players that we don't want their athletic mission to undermine their academic mission, and Tyler has never allowed that to happen."
Â
A sports management graduate in the spring of 2014, Girouard is hitting .335 with a team-best 18 doubles, three home runs and 30 RBI. The senior provided the winning run against No. 13 Houston at the Houston Regional drawing a bases loaded hit by pitch for the walk-off win.
Â
Girouard is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Louisiana and posted a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester. The Lafayette, La., native has helped guide the Cajuns to three straight NCAA tournament appearances including back-to-back Super Regional berths.
Â
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Â
Of the 33 members of the Capital One Academic All-America ® Division I baseball teams, 12 have a 3.90 G.P.A or better. Six of this year's honorees have a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. Florida State was represented by three players, while Illinois State and Omaha each had a pair of players selected.
Â
Girouard is the fifth Louisiana player to earn All-America honors this season joining Blake Trahan, Stefan Trosclair, Gunner Leger and Dylan Moore.
