HOUSTON – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team plays in its final pre-conference tournament of the 2015 season participating in the Adidas Rice Invitational Friday-Saturday, Sept. 11-12 at Tudor Fieldhouse on the Rice University campus.

The Ragin' Cajuns (3-5), appearing in the tournament for the second straight season, begin play with host-Rice (5-2) at 6 p.m., on Friday. The squad concludes play on Saturday taking on No. 23 Colorado (2-3) at 12:30 p.m., and Sam Houston State (4-3) at 5 p.m.

Louisiana is the reigning champion of the Adidas Rice Invitational, claiming the 2014 event with wins over Fresno State, Rice and UC Davis.

The Cajuns are coming off a 3-1 homestand, which included a 2-1 showing in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic and Tuesday's sweep of Southern. Louisiana displayed vast improvement on offense during the homestand, hitting .223 (188 K, 67 E, 542 TA) over four contests.

This weekend's action is the final opportunity for the Cajuns to fine tune their play before opening Sun Belt Conference action next weekend (Sept. 18-20) and UT Arlington and Texas State.

"I'd like for us become comfortable…we haven't had the same lineup yet," head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "This weekend will be big at getting our players comfortable passing beside each other, playing alongside each other and communicating intelligently on the court."

St. Martinville's Chanelle Gardner, who generated 52 kills over 16 sets (3.25/set) and hit .362 during the recent homestand, has been the Cajuns leader on offense. She averages 2.67 kills per set and is hitting .305.

Senior outside hitter Sara Mossakowski returned to action last week after missing the Texas Tech Invitational and has added more punch to the offense. Mossakowksi averaged 2.76 kills per set over four matches last week, tallying double digit kills in three contests.

Setter Jessica Bartczyszyn averaged 9.62 assists per set during the four-match homestand and guided the Cajuns to season-best hitting percentages against Jackson State (.278) and Southern (.291).

Freshmen Sydney Davis, Julia Pasch and Hanna Rovira turned in stellar performances in Tuesday's match vs. Southern. Davis collected a season-high 19 digs, Pasch had four blocks in the opening set alone and Rovira set a school record with a .900 hitting percentage (9 K, 0 E, 10 TA).

Davis tops the Cajuns averaging 3.40 digs per set and has worn the libero jersey in seven of eight outings. Pasch ranks second in blocks with 16, playing alongside Gardner in the middle.

"Our freshman class is staying strong and steady," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "They're keeping us above water right now."

The tournament opener with Rice is a rematch of a match that determined last season's champion. The Ragin' Cajuns topped the Owls 3-2 (25-20, 17-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-7) for the program's first-ever win over the hosts.

Louisiana and Colorado have met only once before, with the Buffaloes posting a straight sets sweep in a tournament hosted by Sam Houston State in August 2012. UL and SHSU squared off last season in Houston's Flo Hyman Collegiate Cup.

NOTEWORTHY
TURNING UP THE HEAT: As a team, Louisiana has reached seven blocks in four of the past five matches. The squad piled up a season-high 12 blocks vs. Houston last Saturday.

SETTLING IN: After a quiet opening weekend at Texas Tech, Chanelle Gardner is steadily gaining momentum. The junior middle blocker has posted double digit kills the past five matches and hit .242 or better each time. She's thrown up at least three blocks during the five-match stretch, reaching eight (2 BS, 6 BA) in the Sawyer Camillo Classic finale vs. Houston.

CLOSER TO SECOND: Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot is six wins shy of sole possession of second place on the program's victories list. Her 106 wins have her chasing Sherry LeBas (111) for second, then Wilo Colon (136) for the lead.

SEIZING THE OPPORUNTITY: Senior Katey Kyle, a junior college transfer, has taken advantage of increased playing time this season. The Pearland, Texas, native has thrown down at least eight kills in four of the past five outings. Kyle is averaging 1.85 kills and 2.04 points per set and is hitting .176.

SELECT COMPANY: At 229 career blocks, Chanelle Gardner is just 16 blocks shy of reaching the rally scoring era career Top 5. The group includes: Kim Rodgers (396), Mandi Gavin (290), Lesely Mirarchi (280) and Elizabeth Inman/Stacy Liverett (245).

SEVENTH HEAVEN: Sara Mossakowski is steadily approaching 700 kills for her career, presently with 670 career kills. She needs 185 more this season to reach the rally scoring era Top 5 list (Kim Rodgers holds fifth place with 855 kills).

RIGHT WHERE THEY LEFT OFF: Freshmen Sydney Davis and Hanna Rovira played as teammates the past three years at St. Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge. In Saturday's Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic finale vs. Houston and Tuesday's contest with Southern, the duo was on the floor together once again as both started each set of the match.

HOMECOMING: The Adidas Rice Invitational is a homecoming for Houston area natives Keely Hayes (Cypress), Katey Kyle (Pearland), Julia Pasch (The Woodlands) and Stacey Reilly (Houston). Associate head coach Jenny Andrew returns to the city she coached the past four seasons, having spent time at Houston Baptist (2011) and Houston (2012-14).

OFF AND RUNNING: Stacey Reilly (Houston/Concordia Lutheran) made her season debut last Saturday in the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic finale vs. Houston. She had missed the season's first six matches due to recovery from a knee injury. Reilly has helped solidify the back row, averaging 3.43 digs per set through seven sets of action.

THE INJURY BUG: Louisiana regained the services of Sara Mossakowski and Stacey Reilly last weekend, but at the same time lost McKenzie John to injury in the Nicholls State match of the Sawyer Camillo Classic. John, who sustained a knee injury, is expected to be out for one month.

RICE SERIES NOTABLES: Ninth meeting all-time, with Rice leading series 7-1…Cajuns are 1-1 vs. Rice with Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot…Programs first met in 1979 at the Lee College Tournament in Baytown, Texas…Cajuns have participated in Rice-based tournaments in 1981, 1982, 2002, 2008 and 2014.

COLORADO SERIES NOTABLES: Second meeting all-time…Colorado won lone previous matchup…Programs met in 2012 at the Comfort Suites SHSU Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.

SAM HOUSTON SERIES NOTABLES: SHSU holds a 13-3 series lead…Ragin' Cajuns have won two of the last three meetings…Prior to UL's sweep last season, the previous three matches went to five sets…Louisiana is 2-2 vs. Sam Houston State with Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot.
