HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ragin' Cajuns junior golfer Fernando Cruz Valle posted a career-best 36-hole start on Monday at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate carding a score of 8-under par (143) to finish in a tie for first at the par-71, 6,902-yard Hattiesburg Country Club.
Â
"Fernando had a brilliant day, and it's nice to see him carry over his good play at home to this tournament," head coach Theo Sliman said. "Apart from a little mental mishap in the afternoon, he played with a lot of patience and poise. I am very impressed with they way he finished out the day after especially after posting a double bogie earlier in the second round."
Â
Cruz Valle opened the day with a bogey-free 67 (-4) before closing out the second round with a birdie on four of his last five holes to notch his second 67 on the day. The Woodlands, Texas native is in a three-way tie with Victor Lange of Louisiana Tech and Robert MacIntyre of McNeese State for individual medalist honors.
Â
As a team, Louisiana is currently in third place at 2-under (566) after tallying back-to-back rounds of 1-under (283). The Cajuns are five strokes back of Louisiana Tech (-7, 561) for second place, while McNeese State has a commanding lead at 19-under (549). UTSA (+3, 571) and Mississippi State (+8, 576) round out the top 5 teams.
Â
"Hats off to McNeese State for their performance today," Sliman added. "It's going to be tough to catch them, but a second place finish is most certainly within our reach. We are going to need to see some better play out of our last two guys in the lineup for that to happen. I have a lot of faith that those guys can come out and have a good showing tomorrow."
Â
Senior Haraldur Magnus also is in the top 10 going into the final round after shooting a 68 (-3) in the second round to end up in a tie for seventh at 4-under (138).
Â
"Haddi might not have brought his best to the course today, but he certainly did find a way to post some low numbers without having his A-game," Sliman said. "That shows some leadership from him to be able to do that."
Â
Andres Navarrete posted rounds of 71 (E) and 73 (+2) in his debut and sits in a tie for 23rd at 2-over (144). Christian Verrougstraete and Ragnar Gardarsson rounded out the scoring for the Ragin' Cajuns with Verrrougstraete in a tie for 57th at 8-over (150) and Gardarsson one stroke back in a tie for 60th.
Â
Freshman Tristan Elston notched a 36-hole score of 6-over (148) to end the day in a tie for 48th as an individual.
Â
Louisiana is paired with McNeese State and Louisiana Tech for the final round. Play gets underway at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring for the third round is available on Golfstat.com.
