Bobcats Capitalize On First Set Momentum Shift

9/20/2015 5:04:00 PM | Volleyball

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State rallied from a 24-21 deficit to capture the opening set and then rode the momentum swing to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-18) win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team Sunday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos, Texas.

The Bobcats (7-7, 2-0 Sun Belt) fought off set point three times in the opening frame getting a kill from Jordan Kohl each time. It was Kohl with a kill again to break a 24-all tie with the Ragin' Cajuns (3-10, 0-2 Sun Belt), then the hosts benefited from an attack error to clinch the set and take a 1-0 lead.

Texas State used a 32-19 advantage in kills over the final two sets to fend off the Cajuns and complete the sweep. Louisiana saw its current losing streak extended to five matches.

Katey Kyle led the Cajuns offense with eight kills. Freshman Nia Antoine threw down a career-high seven kills on 16 attempts. Sara Mossakowski was held to three kills, her lowest output in six starts.

Louisiana hit .176, the best hitting percentage in a road match this season. Texas State countered with a .258 hitting percentage.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Friday, Sept. 25 hosting ULM in the Sun Belt Conference home opener at Earl K. Long Gym. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Cajuns started out strong, hitting .231 in the opening set (12 K, 3 E, 39 TA). The Bobcats offense, which totaled 21 kills in the set, prevailed in the momentum-shifting frame.

Louisiana jumped out to an 8-3 lead and later extended the advantage to 12-5 following a kill by Kyle, ace from Stacey Reilly and kill by Mossakowski. The Bobcats rallied to forge a 17-all tie, then the Cajuns used back-to-back kills from Antoine and Reilly to reclaim the lead.

A block thrown up by Mossakowski and Julia Pasch placed the Cajuns on the verge of set point at 24-21. Kohl's string of four straight kills helped the Bobcats steal the set.

The Ragin' Cajuns hit a match-low .081 in the second set and the Bobcats led wire-to-wire in a 25-17 victory in the second set.

Louisiana bounced back in the third set, committing only three errors over 32 total attacks and hit .219. However, Texas State's 18-10 advantage in kills was too much to overcome.

After splitting the first four points, the Bobcats used back-to-back kills from Kohl to jump ahead 4-2. Chanelle Gardner landed a kill on the next rally, but Texas State rolled off a 6-2 run to grab a 10-5 lead and began pulling away.
